This is an advanced position requiring an area of expertise in a field related to libraries. Professional Library Assistants deliver customer service, reader’s advisory, technical services, digital design, reference assistance, technology support and instruction, market library services, instruct the public on technology usage, assist and deliver life and specific knowledge improvement classes, deliver passport services, and provide support for library events and engagement with other departments and the community. Staff in the delivery of customer services, passport services, technology assistance, and life improvement classes. Must be able to work nights and weekends.

  • Executes the library’s mission of superior customer service in a timely manner.
  • Provides support with all administrative clerical duties.
  • Provides event planning support.
  • Provides unified and systematic website publishing.
  • Plans and coordinates the department’s monthly reports.
  • Assists in grant development and seeks grant opportunities, maintains program records, and assists with the monitoring of the funding.
  • Assists with payroll.
  • Handles confidential correspondence.
  • Participates in Division Service Improvement Teams.
  • Develops and supports Children’s and Adult programming.
  • Provides reference services.
  • Develops library marketing materials.
  • Attends outreach events and provides support for library marketing.
  • Develops classes for all ages as necessary by division.
  • Provides class instruction to groups or individuals.
  • Demonstrates superior customer service, integrity, and commitment to innovation, efficiency, and fiscally responsible activity, and models excellence at the leadership level, serving as a role model for others.
  • Develops surveys and implements their results by providing classes and programming of interest to the community.
  • Supports library events.
  • Attends training classes to improve knowledge and understanding of library services.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

  • Associate degree in a field that is compatible with library services; e.g. ESL Instructor, Computer Science, Library Science, Education, Program Production, Editing, Information Science, Business Administration, Marketing, Business, Arts, Cataloging, Finance.
  • Bachelor’s in a given area of expertise such as English, Social Sciences, Business, Technology, Education, Music, Arts, Media, Communications, Graphic Design, Editing, Cartooning, etc. (preferred).
  • Two or more years of experience in public library services specifically in the area advertised.
  • Working knowledge of Publisher, PowerPoint, Adobe Creative Suite, and web creation software.
  • Bilingual in Spanish or Haitian Creole (preferred).
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to listen and inquire in a manner that leads to successful reference assistance.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
  • Adept and nimble in formulating events, productions, and marketing as needed.
  • Ability to apply attention to detail.
  • Ability to use independent judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and use good judgment in prioritizing work assignments, including the ability to ensure accurate and efficient completion of assignments.
  • Ability to organize, prepare, process, and maintain the required reports, records, documents, and related information. Ability to think outside the box, be creative, and innovative.
  • Ability to write engaging articles and narratives for promotions and grant documentation.
  • Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through personal contact, the use of the telephone, and/or other City-issued technology devices. Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; to stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist under desks and around furniture; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight up to 25
