Job Description
The Embarcadero Media Foundation, the premiere news nonprofit on the San Francisco mid-peninsula, has an immediate opening for the top editor of its 60-year-old weekly newspaper and associated online platform, The Almanac.
The Almanac is the trusted hyperlocal news and information portal serving readers in Menlo Park, Atherton, Woodside, Portola Valley and throughout the mid-peninsula. The editor manages a dedicated team of reporters to produce a must-read daily Express newsletter and coordinates publication of the weekly newspaper. In addition, they will collaborate with other Embarcadero Media Foundation editors, visual journalists, freelancers and audience team members to build better communities through award-winning journalism. The Almanac editor is part of weekly management meetings and helps to plot the course of the company.
The winning candidate will have at least three years of daily journalism experience as well as experience managing reporters. The next leader of The Almanac is a sharp line editor and fluent in AP Style. They must be available for full-time work that is primarily done 9-to-5 weekdays, but there will be some night and weekend work to assure readers get the very latest breaking news. The editor will also be the media foundation’s face in the community and is expected to attend community events and represent the organization when necessary. We offer a hybrid workplace, but the Almanac editor will regularly work out of our convenient and comfortable Palo Alto office that is close to public transportation and offers free parking.
This salaried position comes with excellent health benefits, two weeks of paid vacation and a retirement savings plan. The pay range is between $65,000 and $68,000 annually.
Requirements:* 3 years of experience in daily journalism
* Bachelor's degree or higher in journalism or related field
* Knowledge of Google, Adobe and Microsoft tools
* Familiarity with WordPress platform preferred
* Understanding of issues on the San Francisco peninsula preferred
