General Description
The purpose of this job is to develop, maintain, and assess reference, adult non-fiction materials in print and non-print formats, and adult services for the library system. Also oversees and manages the Information Services (Reference) department staff of the library.
This position works independently, under limited supervision, reporting major activities through periodic meetings.
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent most of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
- Performs all communications with community members, library users, and staff using exemplary customer service skills.
- Must be comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, and can exhibit professional maturity.
- Supervise, direct, and evaluate assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
- Coordinate, assign and review work and establish work schedules; maintains standards; monitor status of work in progress; inspect completed work assignments; answer questions; give advice and direction as needed.
- Can register library patrons by data entry of information into computerized integrated on-line circulation system and explain routine circulation, overdue fines and fees, use of materials within the library, and related policies and procedures to the public in person and over the telephone.
- Charges and discharges library materials via a computerized circulation system.
- Compile statistics and reports as needed or requested.
- Create, plan, and conduct library programs when scheduled or requested.
- Assist in other areas of the library as needed.
- Provide information and assistance to patrons and staff using library materials and other sources.
- Assist patrons with personal devices such as laptops, Kindles, iPads, Androids or iPhones to enable the patron to engage with library resources.
- Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the public.
- Assess current materials, purchase new items and discard worn or outdated materials.
- Borrowing items not owned by the library from other sources and libraries and returning items to the lending facilities.
- Performs other duties and related work as instructed and assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
• Requires a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science from a University or College accredited by the American Library Association.
• Requires four (4) years professional experience, that includes two (2) years of supervisory or administrative responsibilities, or any equivalent combination of related training and experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
• Requires a South Carolina Public Librarians certification.
Reasoning/Math/Language Skills:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents and effectively to inquiries and complaints, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
