Alamance County Public Libraries seeks to provide learning opportunities for all members of our community to be successful in living a larger life by nurturing the heart and the mind.

We are currently seeking an outgoing, friendly individual with the ability to build a positive rapport with a diverse community and staff, and the ability to foster an overall positive library environment.

The Emerging Technologies Librarian is responsible for a variety of technology-related work duties as they relate to the library’s day-to-day service to the public as well as the staff. Emphasis is on providing training, leadership, programs, services, and resources related to technology. Technology may include equipment, devices, online services such as Hoopla, Overdrive, other digital content, the library’s website, and more.

Successful applicants must possess a curious nature and share an interest in learning, teaching, and trying new things. They must possess strong leadership qualities, excellent computer and communication skills, and a strong work ethic. Knowledge of professional library principles, methods, materials, practices, and the ability to work a service desk with an outgoing and welcoming manner for any assigned hours is required. This position will require presenting programs outside the library frequently, including at outdoor stops with our mobile vehicles.

Alamance County Public Libraries functions as a department of Alamance County (N.C.) Government.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Learns and teaches library staff and community members about digital resources and technology equipment.
  • Develops training documentation, procedures, and policies for library technology and equipment, including Discovery Lab components, Chromebooks, hotspots, and any new emerging technologies added to our services/resources.
  • Plans and presents digital literacy and technology-related workshops both in-person, online, and pre-recorded at the library branches and in the community, alone or in coordination with partners.
  • Provides one-on-one help for patrons in conjunction with our mobile vehicles and Home Delivery services, and at partner organizations.
  • Acts as the lead technology librarian and coordinates with coworkers in charge of technology at each branch.
  • Working at the branch’s public service desks and on the mobile vehicles as scheduled, and following established ACPL circulation policies and procedures;
  • Providing bibliographic instruction and readers’ advisory services for library patrons;
  • Responding to in-house and telephone requests for information from library patrons, including complex reference questions;
  • Collaborates with library staff and community partner agencies to create learning opportunities and to promote library services.
  • Collaborates with library staff, administration, and IT to support digital, STEAM, Discovery Lab, job and career, and other emerging technology program opportunities.
  • Maintains knowledge and skills in emerging technologies and digital resources.
  • Serve as a member of various working groups and committees within the library.
  • Represent the library at professional workshops and conferences pertinent to public library services.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a Master of Library Science degree from an ALA accredited university.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for
