The Part-Time Library Specialist performs a wide variety of professional library work including reference services, technical services, and services for children, young adults and/or adults in both a main library and neighborhood library setting.
Salary Range: The appointment for this position is commensurate with experience. The successful candidate for this position must hold a Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university, be working toward one of these degrees, or have work experience in a library setting. The successful candidate will also have a flexible schedule of availability to include weekends, evenings and/or on-call work.
- Providing excellent customer service in person, by phone, email, and chat.
- Using the library catalog and digital resources to provide general information, reference assistance, and readers' guidance to patrons.
- Instructing and assisting patrons in the use of the library's catalog, digital resources, equipment, and technology.
- Developing reading lists and book displays to highlight various library collections.
- Assisting in the development, implementation, and evaluation of library programs and services.
- Maintaining specific areas of the collection, including assessment, selection, and deselection of materials.
- Attending outreach events to promote the library and its services in the community.
- May provide lead direction and training to technical and clerical personnel and volunteers.
Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience likely to provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
- A Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university,
- Working towards one of the above-mentioned degrees,
- OR at least one year of professional library experience.
Desirable: One year of library experience; knowledge of computer-based information resources and applications in a public library; customer service experience; good public speaking skills; self-starter with initiative and enthusiasm to work on ongoing projects.
Knowledge: Knowledge of modern public library organization, objectives, services and their application; principles, laws, policies, methods, and practices of public library administration; modern library equipment operation, including electronic information retrieval systems and online catalogs; library classification, circulation, and cataloging; reference techniques and practices; collection development; and library materials.
Ability: Ability to effectively perform professional library work; promote interest in library services; assist in developing and implementing library programs and services which meet community needs; perform technical library tasks and operate computerized and other library equipment with speed and accuracy; interpret, apply and explain established policies and procedures; establish and maintain accurate records; plan, administer and evaluate work programs and schedules; interpret and analyze information; clearly define problems and develop solutions; prepare reports; set priorities, meet deadlines and make sound decisions; maintain level of knowledge required for satisfactory job performance; communicate effectively; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public and supervise, train and evaluate assigned cler
