POSITION SUMMARY:

Vanguard University is seeking a talented and dedicated University Studio Accompanist to support our music students and faculty in the Department of Music. The accompanist will provide essential piano support for students in private lessons, studio classes, recitals, auditions, and ensemble performances. This position is ideal for a skilled collaborative pianist with a passion for music education and a desire to work in a Christian liberal arts environment. The accompanist will collaborate with students across a variety of musical styles, including classical, contemporary, jazz, and sacred music.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Accompanying Students:
    1. Provide piano accompaniment for individual students during voice, instrumental, and music major lessons.
    2. Assist students in preparing for juries, recitals, and performances, ensuring musical accuracy and interpretive depth.
    3. Collaborate with students on repertoire in diverse genres, including classical, contemporary, jazz, and worship music.
    4. Offer guidance in rehearsal and performance preparation, addressing both technical and expressive elements of the music.
  2. Collaboration with Faculty:
    1. Work closely with faculty members to coordinate rehearsal schedules and performance expectations.
    2. Provide musical support during faculty-led classes, auditions, and masterclasses as needed.
    3. Be available for department-wide projects, such as ensemble performances or faculty-student collaborations.
  3. Repertoire Preparation:
    1. Prepare and rehearse music in advance of performances, ensuring preparedness for individual lessons, recitals, and rehearsals.
    2. Demonstrate flexibility in adapting to the various performance needs and styles required by students.
  4. Performance Support:
    1. Provide piano accompaniment for student recitals, department events, and ensemble performances, including vocal, instrumental, and mixed-genre groups.
    2. Work with students in a supportive and encouraging manner to ensure their performance is well-prepared and artistically successful.
  5. Other Duties:
    1. Attend department meetings and assist with departmental functions when requested.
    2. Ensure clear and professional communication with students, faculty, and staff regarding scheduling and rehearsal requirements.
    3. Maintain a flexible schedule to accommodate recitals, rehearsals, and other departmental activities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Education:
    1. A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Music, Piano Performance, or a related field. A Master’s degree in Piano Performance, Collaborative Piano, or a related field is preferred.
  2. Experience:
    1. Proven experience as a collaborative pianist or accompanist in a university or professional music setting.
    2. Experience working with students, particularly in a classical or worship music context, is highly preferred.
  3. Skills:
    1. Strong proficiency in piano performance, with a demonstrated ability to accompany across various styles and genres.
    2. Excellent sight-reading ability and experience in working with vocalists and instrumentalists.
    3. Ability to learn and adapt to diverse repertoires quickly and accurately.
    4. Familiarity with both classical and contemporary Christian music, including worship music, is a plus.
    5. Strong communication skills and a collaborative, team-oriented approach to work.

WORK SCHEDULE:

  1. The accompanist will work on a flexible, part-time schedule, based on the needs of the department and students.
  2. Availability for evening and weekend hours is required for recitals, auditions, and other performance-related events.

SALARY:

$50.00 to $55.00 (Hourly)
