Job Description:

Overview:

The DCC Writing Center is a well-established campus resource that serves students across the disciplines. Professional tutors work with a variety of students: returning, educationally disadvantaged, honors, transfer-bound, and career-focused. They assist students with expressive and analytical essays, lab reports, creative work, presentations, application and scholarship essays, resumes, cover letters, college transfer essays, informational brochures, and other class assignments. They also handle online tutoring through the DCC and Writing Center websites and must be familiar with technologies and software used in the Writing Center. They conduct orientations and workshops for the Center on writing and research-related topics.

The Writing Center Professional Tutor will be responsible for ensuring that students receive guidance during the semester regarding all academic supports available to provide any needed intervention. The Professional Tutor will advocate for student educational achievement to the highest attainable standard, support student goals, and uphold the educational mission of the college.

Our Writing Center Professional Tutors must demonstrate exceptional interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the supervision of the Director of the Writing Center, the professional tutors will:
  • Participate in the programming activities;
  • Become knowledgeable about and adhere to institutional policies, procedures, and requirements;
  • Participate in, and assist with, facilitating workshops;
  • Continue professional development through Writing Center-offered workshops and trainings to remain current with relevant tutoring practices;
  • Recognize and respect students' diverse backgrounds and possess strong interpersonal communication skills;
  • Manage technology needed to support tutoring programs, including but not limited to Banner, Kronos, TutorTrac, and Bookings;
  • Maintain consistent tutoring practices and build relationships with students;
  • Participate in prospective student and first year programs including orientation, introductory seminar courses, and recruitment initiatives;
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Director of the Writing Center.

Requirements:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in a field of study that enhances the individual's ability to assist students as a Writing Center Professional Tutor.
  • Ability to teach learning strategies to students.
  • Ability to lead small group tutoring sessions.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Concern for student needs in a demanding academic context as well as flexibility, patience, and professional integrity.
  • Knowledge, experience, and ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty, staff, and student body.
  • Ability to work evenings as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree, preferably in higher education or a field of study that enhances the individual's ability to assist students.
  • A minimum of 2 years of related experience in a college setting, especially in the area of English, for delivery of academic support services.
  • Experience working with students in a community college environment.
  • Experience working with ESL students is highly desirable.

Additional Information:

This is a Part-time Temporary position with a contract period of 02/21/2025 - 06/30/2025.

This position is scheduled to work up to 25 hours per week.

Class: DUE Part-time Non Teaching Educator

Salary: $27.86- $32.71 per hour

Academic support positions are covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Dutchess Community College and Dutchess United Educators (DUE).

Employment will require a criminal background screening.
