Conduct initial builds of complex prototype mechanical assemblies such as custom electric actuators, mechanisms and structures for robotic systems. Create test plans and procedures with minimal engineering guidance. Performs a critical role by identifying detailed and nuanced mechanical issues and recommending corrective actions to design engineers. Develop, design, and document detailed assembly processes and work techniques. Plan and design tooling and fixtures for assembly and test using mechanical CAD software such as Catia or Solidworks. Design and implement modifications to prototype robotics components to improve functionality. Consults as a member of a robot engineering team during the design of new robotic platforms. Identify, plan, and execute upon opportunities for contract manufacturing within prototype systems to improve production methods for prototype build volumes. Iterate and improve upon prototype designs in collaboration with design engineers to progress designs from initial prototype toward reproducible assemblies with good quality control. Plan lab equipment, tools and work spaces in coordination with managers and engineers to ensure we have the environment and equipment necessary to accomplish project goals related to creation of prototype robots. Minimum of 6 years experience that includes technical hands-on mechanical expertise. (For example automotive, motorsports, robotics, aircraft repair, etc. Expertise in assembling, troubleshooting, and servicing complex mechanical and electro-mechanical systems Experience in developing processes and tooling/fixturing for assembly of first article prototype builds with minimal engineering guidance Ability to execute high level project objectives quickly and autonomously Basic CAD user (Catia, Solidworks) for opening assemblies and designing tooling and fixturing Soft skills: meticulous attention to detail, team-oriented thinking, collaborative work style, adaptable to consistently changing priorities and team needs, fast learner Flexibility to occasionally work extended hours, driven by the dynamic demands of cutting-edge research and project deadlines. Experience in prototype cable assembly and routing (soldering, crimping, overmolding, etc.) Fabrication skills (welding, machining, etc.) Additional experience working with electronics and electrical systems is a big plus.
