Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job

The Department of Mass Communication at Sam Houston State University is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Practice in Broadcast Journalism.

We are looking for a candidate with hands-on experience in producing newscasts for television and online media platforms, creating news content for social and mobile platforms, and expertise in broadcast interviewing and on-camera presentation techniques.

The ideal candidate should have a professional background in broadcast journalism or production and a proven track record of teaching undergraduate courses in higher education.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching four courses per semester, focusing on topics such as television news production, studio production, broadcast performance, and broadcast journalism in digital video, audio, and streaming platforms. Additionally, the chosen candidate will play a key role in coordinating operations for SHSU’s cable station, Channel 7, and contributing to various departmental and university-wide projects.

This position will begin in Fall 2025.

Educational Requirements for the Position:

MA in journalism or closely related field (other degrees will be considered with commensurate experience).

Experience Required for the Position:

5 – 7 years of professional experience in broadcast journalism.

Preferred Qualifications:

Teaching and mentoring experience in higher education.
