The recently renovated Rachel Kohl Community Library is searching for a new Library Director, due to retirement. The library is in Glen Mills, PA in Delaware County. The library is affiliated with the Delaware County Library System. This is a highly educated and relatively wealthy community, and the library directly serves the townships of Bethel, Chadds Ford, Chester Heights, Concord and Thornbury, PA.
Position Summary:
The Library Director is responsible for the overall administration, management and strategic direction of the library. The Library Director will lead a team of library professionals and work collaboratively with Trustees, volunteers, community and local government officials.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Community Engagement & Advocacy: Act as the public face of the library, advocating for the library’s mission and building strong relationships with community members, local organizations and government officials to promote library services and partnerships. This includes attending government and community meetings and events.
- Financial Management: Manage the library's budget, ensuring responsible stewardship of resources. Secure additional funding through grants and fundraising efforts.
- Personnel Management: Supervise and support library staff, fostering a positive and inclusive work environment that encourages professional development and teamwork. This includes selecting, training, supervising and evaluating employees in accordance with policies.
- Strategic Leadership: Implement the library’s strategic vision in consultation with the Trustees.
- Reporting and Documentation: Prepare regular reports for the Board of Trustees and attend board and committee meetings. Adhere to all regulations, guidelines and requirements of the Office of Commonwealth Libraries and all established legal standards (federal, state, and local). This includes the annual state report and other various reports that may be required.
- Technology Integration: Serve as liaison with county library system on system wide technology updates as well as research emerging resources (ex. e-readers).
- Facility Management: Oversee the maintenance and improvement of library facilities to create a welcoming and safe environment for patrons and staff.
- Program Development: Oversee the development and implementation of a wide range of library programs and services that meet the diverse needs of the community.
- Collection Development: Manage the library's collection, ensuring it remains current, relevant, and responsive to the community's interests and needs.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in library science (or soon-to-be completed degree) from an ALA-accredited program or an OCL-approved PA-based program is required.
- Minimum of 2 years of cross disciplined library experience inclusive of supervising others.
- At least 5 years in a supervisory or managerial capacity (in any company, not for profit, library etc.) highly preferred.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate staff and engage with the community. Demonstrated excellence in communication, including written, verbal, listening and public presentation skills.
- Ability to oversee and prioritize multiple operational functions.
- Demonstrated financial management experience, including budget development and grant writing.
- Knowledge of emerging library technologies and trends.
- Commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in library services, collection development and hiring.
- Demonstrated skill in software applications, including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software and databases.
- Ability to articulate complex issues in a manner understandable to laypersons.
- Ability to read, understand and interpret library statutes, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, reports and financial documents.
- Ability to develop compelling ways to promote the library’s activities to current patrons and increase appeal to prospective patrons.
- Demonstrate passion and commitment to the public library mission and values, while articulating that passion to staff, donors, municipal and community leaders, etc.
Compensation:
This is a full-time, 40 hour/week position. The salary range is $60,000 + (commensurate with experience). Additional benefits include paid time off, Simple IRA and a Health Reimbursement Plan.
