JOB TYPE: Full-time

JOB SUMMARY:

Under the leadership of the Associate Vice President for Academic Resources/Seminary Librarian, the Associate Librarian is responsible for advancing the vision of, providing leadership to, and bringing an innovative and strategic approach to the services provided to patrons of the James P. Boyce Centennial Library. This position provides information literacy, technology literacy, and research instruction online and in the classroom and participates in the development and management of library circulating and reference collections.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

The employee in this position will have the following essential job functions:

STRATEGIC
  • Assisting in the development and implementation of a comprehensive strategic plan, in conjunction with the AVP/Seminary Librarian, for ensuring that information resources and library services support and enhance the mission of the Seminary
  • Researching, implementing new technologies and software
  • Planning, promoting, and assessing library services to support the teaching and learning process
  • Establishing goals and assessing accomplishments for library services and collections against recognized standards and performance indicators
  • Participates in budget planning and management under the leadership of the AVP/Seminary Librarian
  • Developing the services provided to meet more effectively the present and future needs of the seminary and its programs
  • Developing, evaluating, and implementing library service policies to carry out the mission of the library and the strategic agenda of the seminary
  • Participating in planning, managing, and evaluating the development and use of traditional and digital library collections and services
  • Planning, promoting, and coordinating library and campus-wide information and technology literacy instruction
  • Accumulating and providing metric and narrative data required for annual reporting

MANAGEMENT
  • Recruiting, managing and evaluating the performance of staff assigned to this position including two full-time employees (Circulation Coordinator and Inter-Library Loan & Distance Learning Coordinator), part-time Research Experts, and Circulation Assistants
  • Developing, providing, and evaluating training and instruction services to students, staff, and faculty in the effective use of information resources
  • Oversees part-time and full-time scheduling; to ensure full coverage and resolve all emergency scheduling conflicts
  • Managing collections and services, analyzing and reporting of appropriate data

FACILITIES
  • Responsible for general maintenance of facilities including security alarms, water leaks, etc., and submitting work orders related to those problems

CONTINUING EDUCATION
  • Maintaining current knowledge of new developments in the library field
  • Representing the AVP/ Seminary Librarian and the library, as requested, on library and seminary committees and at local, regional, and national professional meetings
  • Individual in this position should have earned or be completing a MLS degree to comply with accreditation requirements
  • If not already possessing an accredited terminal degree, working toward the completion of the MLS degree

Performs other duties as may be assigned by supervisor.

EDUCATION:

The person in this position should possess an American Library Association-accredited master's degree in library science (e.g., MLS, MSLS) as well as an accredited advanced degree in biblical and theological studies (e.g. MDiv, MA). A PhD degree in biblical studies, church history, theology, or library science is preferred so that the Associate Seminary Librarian is eligible to hold faculty status.

EXPERIENCE:

The person in this position should have a minimum of five years of professional library supervisory experience; excellent personal communications skills, experience with an integrated library system; demonstrated collaborative and team building skills; demonstrated experience managing, initiating and fostering change; knowledge of existing and emerging technologies; instructional experience; strong written and oral communication skills.
