The Missouri School of Journalism seeks a top-notch editor who has a strong foundation in the fundamentals of sports journalism but isn't stuck in the past. Join us at the nation's top journalism school, where you will help prepare bright young people for a future in sports journalism.
As the Associate Sports Editor at the Columbia Missourian, you will also serve as an assistant professor of practice, teaching both in the classroom and the newsroom. You will work with some of the best journalism students in the country, mentoring them as they cover collegiate, prep, and pro sports, while teaching a course every semester.
Job Duties Include:
- Working with the sports editor and other newsroom editors to assign and edit a team of eager journalists.
- Organizing coverage of sports at the collegiate and prep levels, along with feature stories and special projects.
- Editing and producing the award-winning Sports section of the print edition of the Missourian.
- Helping produce the digital sports products of the Missourian.
- Overseeing a pipeline that brings new students into the sports department.
- Teaching a journalism class every semester.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field.
- 5 years of professional experience, including reporting and management.
Candidates Will Be Evaluated On:
- Sports reporting and editing experience.
- A proven commitment to accuracy and editing.
- Design experience in print and digital products; Adobe InDesign experience is a plus.
- Ability to envision multiple ways users interact with information.
- Curiosity about and comfort with digital tools and trends.
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative problem-solving skills.
