Karp Strategies is immediately seeking a Technical Environmental Graphic Designer (Project Based Role) to work part-time (15-20 hours per week) for the next 3–4 months as part of our project team for the Gateway Program’s Weehawken (NJ) Community Engagement Center. Reporting to the Design Lead, this role focuses on the technical and fabrication elements of environmental graphic design, ensuring the successful planning, development, and delivery of exhibit spaces set to open in late spring.

Please note, that this position is Project-based and employment terms (dates of employment, length of employment, and hours) will be driven by the needs of the project you will be hired to support. We currently anticipate this role to start immediately and to last for up to 3-4 months, although the duration may change. There may be an opportunity to extend employment beyond these terms depending on project and firm needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Design Lead and project team to support the planning, design, and installation of exhibit spaces for the Weehawken Community Engagement Center.
- Create detailed, to-scale drawings and understand architectural plans, elevations, sections, and details.
- Support environmental graphic design projects, ensuring alignment with project objectives, timelines, and budgets if needed.
- Support coordination with vendors, fabrication teams, and consultants if needed.
- Create compelling designs and technical drawings using tools like InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, CAD tools, and SketchUp.
- Experience with SignAgent Pro.
- Ensure design packages adhere to project specifications and fabrication standards.
- Working knowledge of fabrication techniques and materials.
- Strong layout and typography skills including the ability to create, layout and design large presentations and environmental graphic design packages.
- Work collaboratively with internal teams, stakeholders, and external partners to ensure designs are meaningful, inclusive, and impactful. This includes working directly with the Gateway team, outreach and engagement leads, and other team members to receive feedback and direction and to coordinate.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Industrial Design, 10+ years of professional experience in environmental graphic design, with an emphasis on technical execution and fabrication.
- Strong knowledge of fabrication techniques, processes, and materials. Extensive experience with planning, designing, and delivering exhibit spaces or similar projects.
- Exceptional layout and typography skills, with the ability to create large-scale presentations and technical design packages.
- Strong proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, CAD tools, and SketchUp; familiarity with SignAgent Pro is highly preferred.
- Project management experience and ability to work in teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with experience collaborating with diverse teams, fabricators, and stakeholders.
- A passion for creating public-facing designs that educate, inspire, and foster community connection.
- Spanish proficiency is a plus, but not required.
- Work in a start-up environment with a close-knit team and our project partners on miscellaneous tasks, big or small, as they arise.
- A deep curiosity about planning issues and an interest in incorporating an equity lens to our work is strongly encouraged.
Salary + Benefits
This position is paid hourly at a rate of $36 - $42. We anticipate that this role will work up to 20 hours each week with possible work falling on evenings and weekends.
Placement of a candidate within this salary band will be based on the competencies crucial to success in the role of rated proficiency for each area.
