Law Librarian Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

Information and Research Services:

  1. Provide legal research assistance to attorneys.
  2. Respond to requests for case law, statutes, regulations, legal articles, and other legal materials.
  3. Assist users on legal research techniques and tools, including databases like Westlaw and LexisNexis.

Library Management:

  1. Organize and maintain physical and digital collections, including books, journals, case reporters, and online databases.
  2. Develop and implement library policies, procedures, and workflows.
  3. Oversee cataloging, classification, and indexing of legal materials.

Collection Development:

  1. Evaluate and select legal resources to add to the collection based on user needs and budget constraints.
  2. Negotiate with vendors for subscriptions, licensing, and procurement of legal resources.

Technology and Digital Services:

  1. Manage access to electronic databases and digital legal resources.
  2. Stay updated on emerging trends in legal research technology and digital content.

Administrative Duties:

  1. Prepare budgets and track expenditures.
  2. Prepare reports on library usage, resource allocation, and user satisfaction.

Qualifications:

Education:

  1. Degree in Library and Information Science.

Skills:

  1. Strong understanding of legal systems, terminology, and research methodologies.
  2. Proficiency in legal research databases and library management software.
  3. Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Experience:

  1. Prior experience in a law library or related legal environment is often preferred.
  2. Knowledge of cataloging standards and legal citation formats.
