Library Assistant - Makerspace

The Concord Free Public Library is seeking a Library Assistant to help us expand public access to our new makerspace! The Workshop opened in June 2023 and is a completely free, all-ages makerspace outfitted with more than one hundred high-tech machines and traditional tools, including sewing machines, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, heat presses, a knitting and crochet lending library, and a Glowforge Pro laser cutter.

This position will be responsible for providing patrons access to the Workshop’s tools, monitoring and maintaining a safe maker environment, assisting visiting artists and teachers with classroom set-up, and triaging tool errors for troubleshooting. Qualifications: HS Diploma, plus 1-6 months library experience. Attention to detail and strong customer service and communications skills essential.

Pay rate: $22.69-$26.85/hour. Work Schedule: Weekly Fridays, 10-4 PM and Saturdays, 10-3 PM.

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under the general supervision of the Makerspace Coordinator, provides circulation desk and other services to makerspace patrons; explains use of makerspace equipment and library databases; assists patrons in answering their questions. Performs a variety of clerical and other library support services; checking items in and out and ensuring that shelves are in order. Responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under the direction and control of the position. Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of departmental operations and the exercise of judgment and initiative in completing tasks, particularly in situations not clearly defined by precedent or established policies and procedures. Incumbent is called upon to handle a significant amount of detail, each varying from the other in substance and content, requiring incumbent to approach workload with flexibility.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Provides positive, courteous service to public and internal customers in a team-oriented environment to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction.
  2. Assists in the promotion of and activities related to makerspace.
  3. Performs circulation responsibilities; registers patrons for library cards; checks in and out library materials using RFID and other technologies; processes tool reservations and other requests; assists patrons with catalog searches and using technology such as self-checkout, navigating the Internet, and accessing digital media.
  4. Assists patrons in locating materials in the library; performs reference work upon request; answers patrons’ questions.
  5. Assists patrons with technical guidance on makerspace equipment, such as sewing machines, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, heat presses, a knitting and crochet lending library, and a Glowforge Pro laser cutter.
  6. Provides assistance with the apps and software involved in the makerspace process.
  7. Assists library patrons with electronic and digital resources including downloadable books, music, and other media.
  8. Shelves materials and maintains shelf order.
  9. Creates brief cataloging records and performs data entry for periodicals; sorts books and returns them to their proper location; sorts deliveries and checks in items.
  10. Performs special projects and related responsibilities as initiated and requested.
  11. Performs other related duties as required, directed or as the situation dictates.
  12. Regular attendance at the workplace is required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

High School Diploma plus one to six months library experience. Familiarity with makerspace technology preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills; ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; ability to effectively interact with all members of the public in a courteous and tactful manner; ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with coworkers.

Ability to communicate technology in a user-friendly way to different patrons of all ages.

Intermediate level computer skills; ability to operate a wide variety of office equipment including telephone, copier, etc.

Knowledge of library principles and procedures; familiarity with automated library systems and related applications; knowledge of standard office procedures, practices, forms and equipment; knowledge of reference sources.

Ability to work in a multi-tasking environment with constant interruption.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Normal office environment, not subject to extreme variations of temperature, noise, odors, etc. Majority of work is performed in a quiet work environment, with constant interruptions. Frequently subjected to the demands of other individuals and the volume and/or rapidity with which tasks must be accomplished.

Operates computer, printer, video display terminal, telephone, other standard office equipment, and makerspace equipment such as sewing machines, 3D printers, vinyl cutters, heat presses, a knitting and crochet lending library, and a Glowforge Pro laser cutter, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity. Standing, walking, balancing, crouching, grasping, pulling, reaching, crawling and stooping are required.
