Library Assistant (Children’s Program) for Town of Ulster Public Library

Come be part of a great library community! A friendly manner with all ages, not just children, is a must. We are seeking a full-time (35 hours per week) active and reliable person to be a part of a busy library committed to serving a wonderful and engaged community.

Qualifications:
The candidate must be creative, energetic, and flexible with the ability to present engaging programs for ages birth to 12 years and must possess enthusiasm for working with children and families. The children’s programmer will be able to confidently plan programs and events, coordinate publicity, create book displays and exhibits, and be aware of current trends in children’s literature and interests with a commitment to exceptional customer service.

Duties and Work Activities:

  • Presents and plans programs for children (ages birth-12) and families.
  • Plans and presents the Summer Reading Program while working with the adult and teen programmer.
  • Plans and presents at least one weekly program for school-aged children, semi-regular themed family nights, and other children’s programming.
  • Plans and presents at least one weekly storytime for children (birth-preschool age).
  • Creates marketing and promotional materials (including press releases, social media, posters/flyers, and related activities).
  • Regular duties will also include providing quality customer service and reader’s advisory for children, parents, and caregivers.
  • Makes recommendations for, assists in procuring, and catalogs the children’s collection.
  • Communicates and collaborates with and supports local schools and school librarians.
  • May assist and instruct the public in the use of public access computers.
  • Ability to understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Maintains youth services statistics.

Compensation and Benefits:

  • $21 – $23/hour commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications:
This position falls under Ulster County Civil Service, and as such must meet the following MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either:

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Library Science, English or Communications or closely related field and one (1) year of experience in a library setting or performing duties related to the supervision, coordination, and administration of youth programs; OR
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Education, Library Science, English or Communications or closely related field and three (3) years of experience in a library setting or performing duties related to the supervision, coordination, and administration of youth programs; OR
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and five (5) years experience in a library setting or performing duties related to the supervision, coordination, and administration of youth programs; OR
An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in A., B., and C. above.

Distinguishing Features of the Class:
The position involves the responsibility of overseeing, supervising, and organizing the development of children’s programs within a library. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Library Director with leeway allowed for exercising independent judgment in the delivery of programs. Does related work as required.
