Overview and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director of Library Services, the Library Services Assistant is responsible for assisting students, employees, and community library users in accessing the College’s library collections, locating materials, inventorying materials, and performing a variety of related functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as primary contact for library guests during scheduled shift; check out and check in library materials.
  • Assist guests with holds, bookings, and circulation of technology and library study rooms.
  • Assist guests with locating physical/print library materials such as books, films, games, etc.
  • Assist with inventorying of physical library resources.
  • Assist guests with using library resources, including the library online catalog and other digital resources.
  • Process library periodicals including newspapers, magazines, and journals.
  • Maintain familiarity with library reference materials and resources, databases, and searching techniques.
  • Assist with library programming.
  • Participate in department meetings as required.
  • Provide light reference assistance, including directions to other departments within the College, to guests through email, telephone, chat, and in-person inquiries; refer to librarian when required.
  • Assist guests with ordering, picking up, and returning textbooks via online bookstore.
  • Provide support for librarians.

  • Excellent customer service and computer skills and be prepared to work with a diverse group of customers of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Ability to carry, retrieve, and shelve materials accurately and efficiently.
  • Ability to learn and efficiently use the library’s automation system.
  • Ability to utilize computer technology for communicating and record keeping.
  • Initiative and the ability to thrive in a changing and collaborative environment.
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to model integrity through self-awareness, personal accountability, ethical behavior, quality standards, and sustainable practices.

Basic knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma
  • Library-related work experience preferred
  • Interest or experience with library services in an academic library
