Datadog's APM team is building a world-class tracing product that helps developers see inside complex distributed systems. We're building rock solid libraries to trace requests as they flow across servers, databases, caches and microservices in all the major languages. We're investing heavily in systems to process a massive firehose of data - fast data pipelines, scalable storage systems and a slick UI to tie it all together. We are looking for a software engineer to work on our open-source Java library. On top of working on the daily life of this open-source project, it includes working with Java experts across our products to deliver a market leader observability library!

What You’ll Do:

  • Develop primarily in Java but also have opportunities to become a contributor in any of our other language SDKs
  • Instrument Java source code at compilation time to be able to monitor Java services at run time
  • Contribute to the architecture, design and implementation of APM for Java
  • Work closely with the many APM ecosystem teams building features and capabilities through working groups (aka squads) and RFCs
  • Collaborate with our OpenTelemetry teams in shaping how Datadog integrates with the OTel ecosystem
  • Ensure that your quality criteria are met through rigorous testing, health metrics, performance monitoring metrics, etc.
  • Write code that instruments thousands of Java services around the world
  • Develop your Java Runtime knowledge
  • Closely collaborate with the Datadog Java Library Squad

Who You Are:

  • You have a BS/MS/PhD in a scientific field or equivalent experience
  • You have experience with the OpenJDK Java runtime
  • You have been exposed to working on problems at scale (high durability / low latency /…)
  • You can get down to the low-level when needed
  • You care about simple designs and performance
  • You want to work in a fast, high-growth startup environment that respects its engineers and customers

Bonus Points:

  • You are familiar with JVM ins and outs (GC, JIT, bytecode, etc).
  • You have experience in JNI
  • You have significant backend programming experience in one or more languages (Java, Go, Rust, C++)
  • You have experience with performance optimization of applications, frameworks and libraries

The reasonably estimated yearly salary for this role at Datadog is:

$187,000 — $240,000 USD
