Department Summary

The SJSU School of Music serves over 300 music majors pursuing undergraduate degrees in Music (BA, BM_Composition, BM_Jazz Studies, BM_Music Education, BM_Performance), as well as the Master of Music degree. With a faculty roster of approximately 60 artist/teachers, students in the School receive professional individual and group instruction, supporting curricular standards guided by best practices. The School is accredited by NASM and presents over 200 performances per season throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Website: https://www.sjsu.edu/music/


Brief Description of Duties

Teach courses in Music as described below:

Academic classes, including applied instruction in all band and orchestral instruments, voice, and keyboard; classroom courses in all aspects of music history; general education courses in music; and all music ensembles (e.g., band, chamber, choir, jazz band, orchestra) at introductory and advanced levels.

  • Demonstrate awareness of and address the needs of a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
  • Organize all classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Ensure all classes meet as scheduled throughout the entire semester or term, in the assigned mode (i.e., asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in-person, or hybrid).

Required Qualifications

  • Music candidates for history, ethnomusicology, music literature, and theory must possess a Master's Degree.
  • Music candidates for studio instrumental, opera, voice, jazz, popular music, and business/commercial music may possess a Master's Degree or a Bachelor of Music plus exceptional professional achievement.
  • Demonstrate awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population.
  • Ability to evaluate adult learners.
  • Evidence of satisfactory achievement in previous academic work.

Anticipated starting salary:

L-A / Range 2 - $5507 - $5959
L-B / Range 3 - $6221 - $7481
L-C / Range 4 - $6825 - $9431
L-D / Range 5 - $8593 - $10347

Range salaries above are the anticipated monthly salary rate of full-time AY faculty--part-time rates are prorated. There are 6 monthly payments per semester (full-time AY annual salary = rate x 12). See the Faculty Salary Schedule for more information.

Employment Conditions

Faculty employees must complete CSU employee training as assigned and required based on their role. The work for this faculty position is located in the State of California and requires commuting to the campus. Employment is contingent upon proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
