The Miami Herald is seeking a real estate reporter to break news, spot trends and dig deep into the fast-changing world of how and where we live and work in South Florida.

This reporter will tell the stories of a changing skyline and new neighborhoods, track changes in prices and sales, keep tabs on urban redevelopment, and stay ahead of a condo crisis that is pricing people out of their homes as new laws require repairs in the aftermath of the Surfside building collapse.

This beat demands both quick turns off news and trends and step-back accountability and enterprise to explain what’s going on and why. The focus area is Miami Dade and Broward counties, where real estate – buying, selling, building, demolishing, rebuilding, renovating – is an economic engine that keeps our region humming.

This is a beat that will keep you busy, with three or four stories a week. Expect to tell your stories in narratives, newsletters, public service lists, summaries, explainers, data visuals, social video and in-person presentations. You’ll collaborate with other reporters in the newsroom whose beats touch the real estate world. You’ll also need to develop deep sources to break exclusives and spotlight trends.

We are looking for a reporter brimming with ideas, one who can take a topic or tip and find the sharp angle and wide lens and tell a story with authority and context.

Candidates should have the following skills:

  • At least five years of journalism experience in a daily newsroom.
  • Commitment to a digital-first, audience-forward approach on news and trends.
  • Speed to break stories first, and then follow through on developments.
  • Experience with analyzing data and creating data visuals.
  • Strong writing skills and ability to take complex issues and present them clearly for a general audience.
  • Willingness to engage audiences in social media and at live events.
  • Speed in turning assignments into quick-turn stories.
  • An understanding of the real estate industry to break it down simply for our audience.

Job requirements:

  • This position is based in South Florida, with flexibility in working remotely and in the newsroom.
  • At least 3-4 weekly stories in a variety of formats.
  • Contribute to social media coverage (Reels, TikTok).
  • Strong command of news writing style and command of basics of English.

To apply:

The Herald strives to attract journalists from a broad array of social, ethnic, and economic backgrounds into our newsroom, including African Americans, Hispanics, other people of color, women, LGBTQ people, and people with disabilities. We encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply.

With your application, please include your resume, five samples of your work, and a letter outlining how you would develop sources, find great stories and engage new audiences in this role.
