Random House is currently seeking an Executive Editor with a proven record for publishing successful, high-quality nonfiction, to acquire and edit books that uphold the spirit of this esteemed list while helping to chart a bold and creative future. Reporting to the Editor in Chief, this is an exciting opportunity for an editor looking to build a list of smart, accessible nonfiction with commercial potential.

If you have a love for nonfiction, an established acquisitions record, and impeccable editorial skills then we’re looking for you!

This hybrid position has occasional in-office responsibilities, including but not limited to in-office meetings, author visits, and events. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway, which includes the tri-state area (NJ, CT, & PA).

Please apply using our ATS system by February 6, 2025, and include your resume, cover letter, and acquisition list for consideration.

The Role:

  • Actively solicit, acquire, and evaluate nonfiction with critical and bestselling potential, and identify categories to explore for growth potential.
  • Work with writers to develop and finalize manuscripts, from substantive structural feedback to line edits, and engage and partner with them on a fully realized publishing campaign.
  • Manage the lifecycle of the editorial process from acquisition to publication: collaborate with designers, art directors, and production teams, as well as with sales, publicity, and marketing teams, to publish and position books as efficiently and effectively as possible.
  • Mentor junior staff, as opportunities arise.
  • Overall, be a powerful and proactive advocate for your titles, your colleagues’ lists, and the Random House imprint as a whole.

The Essentials:

  • 8-10 years of relevant editorial acquisition experience in trade book publishing.
  • A track record of acquiring and publishing bestselling, profitable, and critically acclaimed books.
  • An expansive network of agent, author, and wider cultural contacts.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively and to be supportive of other team members as well as authors.
  • Diplomacy and sensitivity in handling delicate conversations with multiple parties.

The Salary range for this position is $90,000 - $140,000. Candidates with a proven track record of acquiring and publishing multiple adult non-fiction titles appearing on the New York Times bestseller list and/or selected for national book club lists will be eligible for a salary between $120,000 - $140,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
