Harris County Public Library (HCPL) - HistoryWhat began in 1921 and the years following as a collection of small libraries housed in stores, post offices and private homes has grown into a system of 26 branch buildings, 2 technology service centers, and 2 partner locations offering collection/circulation services. HCPL operates branches in unincorporated parts of Harris County and cities which do not have their own library systems.

What you will do at Harris County Public Library

Under the general direction of the Manager of Outreach Services, this position is responsible for providing library services through mobile outreach vehicles. This includes operating and driving vehicles and performing basic inspection and upkeep. This position works with the mobile outreach team to create and conduct STREAM programming for children and teens, shares information about library resources and services with the public during outreaches and events, and works alongside partner organizations to support their programs.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Operates, drives and performs basic maintenance on outreach vehicles.
  • Works with outreach team to create and conduct children's STREAM programs and deliver services through library outreach vehicles.
  • Coordinates with partner organizations to support partner outreach programming.
  • Acts as a costumed mascot, when needed.
  • Promotes library services to youth and their caregivers, adults, and community groups.
  • Develops and maintains cooperative relationships with local schools, youth organizations, and community groups.
  • Circulates library materials and assists with collection shelving and maintenance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • One (1) year of verifiable program experience (e.g., activities for all ages).

OR

  • Associate degree in any field or 60 hours of secondary education credits from an accredited college or university.
  • Three (3) years of verifiable program experience (e.g., activities for all ages).

OR

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of verifiable program experience (e.g., activities for all ages).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Excellent communication skills (verbal & written).
  • Understanding of digital literacy, social media, and other emerging technology or technology trends.
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and modern technology.
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently, with limited supervision, as well as collaboratively with HCPL and HCJPD staff.
  • Ability to drive a mobile library, a Ford F59 P1000 Body type vehicle (length 26’- “UPS/FEDEX” Body Type).

  • Bilingual (preferred).

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Full-time | Regular – 40 hours a week.
  • Typical shifts are Day, Evening, Nights, Weekends, etc.
  • May require attending meetings, council sessions, or after-hours events and off-site meetings.

Salary:

  • $19.53 Per Hour.
  • Paid Biweekly.

Work Environment and Physical Demands:

  • This job typically operates in a professional office environment with overhead lighting and long periods of screen time.
  • Daily use of a computer, keyboard, copier, scanner, printer, calculator, phone (desk and cell).
  • Daily use of software programs, including Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, Word, Excel, and GPS.
  • At times, work may be performed in an outdoor environment and may have possible exposure to inclement weather or various temperature changes.
  • Driving: Available and reliable transportation for work-related duties.
  • Sitting for long periods; light physical activity that may include walking, standing, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting, and carrying.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and exert up to 25 pounds. Occasionally lifts, carries, and exerts up to 40 pounds.

Reporting Relationships:

  • Reports To Position: Curiosity Cruiser Supervisor.
  • Supervises Positions: None.

Library Administration Office - 5749 S Loop East, Houston, TX 77033.
