The Salvation Army, an internationally recognized non-profit, faith-based organization, has a temporary job opening for a Camp Female Counselor – Music Conservatory for Camp Hidden Lake in Lexington, Mississippi.

Job Summary:

Plans, implements, coordinates, and supervises an assigned group of children and youth; always promotes quality of programs and safety of campers; provides guidance and role modeling to campers; promotes and stimulates camper participation; coordinates and leads campers through their daily schedule ensuring punctuality and responsibility; supervises campers during unscheduled program time and evenings; always ensures compliance with camp rules and regulations.

Essential Functions:

  1. Supervises and organizes an assigned group of campers during scheduled activities and unscheduled blocks of time in cooperation with camp rules and regulations.
  2. Promotes and stimulates participation of campers to ensure a pleasant camp experience.
  3. Supervises cabin clean up and work details.
  4. Coordinates and leads youth through their daily schedule ensuring punctuality and responsibility.
  5. Lives with a group of campers and helps each camper adjust and get to know other campers and camp life.
  6. Interprets and maintains camper compliance with camp rules and safety regulations.
  7. Assists with program activities and other activities as assigned working closely with the program staff.
  8. Be prepared with rainy day activities as needed.
  9. Inspects fire extinguishers and reports to Head Counselor if any extinguisher has been dispensed.
  10. Ensures that all cleaning solutions are locked up except during use and used only with supervision.
  11. Assures that all beds in cabin have at least 30 inches between sides of beds; there should be adequate space to provide freedom of movement and allow for exit in an emergency.
  12. Stays in cabin with campers at night and ensures proper supervision.
  13. Keeps door to room open at night to maintain order.
  14. Maintains an incident report book on all campers for each camp session.
  15. Notifies Head Counselor immediately of any serious situation.
  16. May be asked to teach a class according to experiences or expertise.
  17. At the end of each camp session, wipes down all mattresses, sinks, showers, toilets, and mops floors with bleach water to control germs.
  18. Provides constant care for the needs of the campers in an efficient, clean, loving, safe, secure, and healthy manner.
  19. Exhibits control of the campers and, when needed, displays proper discipline techniques.
  20. Determines appropriate supplies and materials for activities; ensures the campers’ safety in utilizing them.
  21. Maintains the camp materials in an orderly fashion; maintains accountability for any laundry, money, and supplies necessary for camp programs.
  22. Prepares and maintains up-to-date records and required reports (attendance, development progress, discipline reports, etc.).
  23. Assists in leading campers during waterfront, nature, outdoor, arts & crafts, or other activities.
  24. Ensures the accountability, security, and safety of children participating in camp activities.
  25. Participates enthusiastically as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities.
  26. Sits with camper tables during meals and serves as a table monitor when needed.
  27. Keeps personal living quarters neat, clean, and ready for inspection.
  28. Available to participate and assist with camp programs and activities as directed by the Camp Director.
  29. May assist in cleaning the cabins, kitchen, tables, floors, etc. in accordance with established sanitary standards.
  30. May assist in preparing and serving snacks and meals; ensures that campers receive nutritional and tasteful food.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Knowledge of the principles and practices of child and youth behavior and development.
  2. Knowledge of the principles and practices of First Aid and C.P.R.
  3. Ability to plan, develop, facilitate, and supervise children and youth programs and activities.
  4. Ability to build and maintain effective mentor relationships with children and youth.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively with campers and camp staff.
  6. Ability to observe camper and staff behavior, assess its appropriateness, and enforce safety regulations.
  7. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental hazards.
  8. Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid.
  9. Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  10. Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language.

Education and Experience:

Six months experience teaching child development or youth programs in a church preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses and Certifications:

CPR and First Aid Certification.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Some physical requirements of the Camp Counselor position could include endurance, climbing, standing, bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours.

Additional Information:

Camp Staff Orientation will be held 06/09/2025 – 06/13/2025 and full participation is required.

The 2025 Summer Camp program will be held 06/16/2025 – 07/19/2025. All staff members are expected to work the entire summer to receive a bonus. If you are unable to work the entire program session, please let us know on your application.

Compensation: $500/week
