The City of Norfolk's Department of Libraries is currently seeking a Supervising Librarian I for its Richard A. Tucker Memorial Library. This position provides assistance to patrons in answering questions, locating information, and interpreting resources through manual and automated sources. Assists with collection and program development. Also catalogs and classifies library materials. Provides library tours and conducts instruction classes.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
- Responsible for supervising all aspects of the branch in the absence of the branch manager.
- Responsible for supervising and training staff members.
- Assists with scheduling staff and payroll recordkeeping.
- Provides customer service by assisting patrons with library materials and services, including reference questions involving resources in print and electronic formats, Internet and database searching, and community information.
- Will be required to serve on the public service desks and the computer lab.
- Assists patrons with using computers, copiers, and scanners.
- Performs administrative duties by preparing and analyzing statistical reports, assisting with outreach activities, and participating in system-wide committees as assigned.
- Assists with the selection of library materials, helps with ordering programming and office supplies, and assists with the weeding of materials.
- Demonstrates the ability to provide Reader's Advisory services to patrons of all ages.
- Participates in program planning, creates displays, and assists with other library projects as assigned.
- Represents Norfolk Public Library at outreach events.
- Performs administrative duties by preparing and analyzing statistical reports.
- Participates in committees and attends training related to the job.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Demonstrates the ability to prioritize tasks.
- Demonstrates the ability to lead and work in a team setting.
- Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Work requires specialized knowledge in a professional or technical field. Work requires a professional level of knowledge of a discipline which is acquired in a Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university.
One year of professional experience in library services or a related field.
- Proficiency with computers, internet searching, and Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Supervisory and/or management experience.
- State of Virginia Professional Librarian Certification.
- Valid Driver's license.
Work Hours: 40 hours/week; evenings and weekends required.
