Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners is hiring: Senior Substitute Librar

Senior Substitute Librarian (part-time), Somerville Public Library (Somerville)

We seek cheerful, enthusiastic, and flexible individuals who possess a strong attention to detail and who want to join a team committed to providing excellent library services to patrons of all ages. Essential functions include:

1. Staffing public service desks in Reference, Children’s, Teen, and Circulation departments at the Central Library and at the branches as needed.
2. Offering reference and readers’ advisory services.
3. Assisting patrons with using public computers, printers, copier/scanner, and fax machine.
4. Assisting library staff with programs and outreach initiatives.
5. Interacting with the public cheerfully and with tact.
6. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

1. Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited Library and Information Science program preferred (students currently enrolled in an accredited graduate library school program, with current or past coursework in reference, reader services, children and youth services, and related areas are encouraged to apply).
2. Excellent reference and customer service skills, and ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing are required.
3. Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately and thoroughly.
4. Knowledge of the principles and practices of public library operations.
5. Must be available evenings and weekends, up to 19 hours per week.
6. Must be flexible, particularly concerning schedule.
7. Multilingual ability preferred.
