Description: Provides library programs for children, a wide range of traditional and digital reference and readers’ advisory services, and assists with collection development.
Essential Job Functions:
- Develops, implements, and evaluates programs and services for children (aged 0-12) and their families, including story times, craft programs, STEM programs, and reading programs as a member of the Youth Services team.
- Regularly scheduled to work at the Youth Services Information Desk advising and assisting library patrons with reference, readers’ advisory, information requests, program registration, and routine circulation tasks.
- Provides basic computer support and offers informal instruction to patrons on the use of lexiles, library catalog, iPads, online databases, and internet.
- Selects materials for acquisition and/or disposition in assigned areas of the collection and performs other collection development duties as needed.
- Develops age-appropriate crafts and youth-oriented displays in cooperation with other library staff members. Is able to navigate or learn Zoom hosting, Beanstack, Communico, and Canva.
- Works with schools, preschools and other youth-related organizations under the direction of the Head of Youth Services, to provide outreach programs and to promote reading and the use of the public library.
- Attends library staff meetings and participates in job related continuing education opportunities.
- Assists with clerical projects as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of children’s literature.
- Knowledge of child development combined with age appropriate readers’ advisory.
- The ability to create and execute well-planned programs and activities for youth with enthusiasm.
- Strong customer service orientation. Must be a team player, flexible, creative, and enthusiastic.
- Ability to work and communicate orally and in writing, in an effective manner, with the public and staff. Capacity to communicate effectively on the telephone. Ability to speak effectively in front of groups.
- Ability to type, to read written materials, to maintain files, to operate computers and other library machines and equipment.
- Ability to return and retrieve books and other library materials to shelves or other designated places.
- In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the following represent the physical and environmental demands of this position: this position requires approximately equal amounts of time spent standing, walking, and sitting. Lifting, pushing/pulling, and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds is sometimes required. Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, twisting, and bending are sometimes required. Repetitive movements of the hands and arms are sometimes required. Audio, visual, and verbal functions are essential to performing this position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master of Library Science degree from an American Library Association accredited college or university preferred or Bachelor’s Degree with equivalent experience. Minimum requirements are at least two years of college or five years of related experience working with children with knowledge of children’s literature and programming. Coursework in education, children’s literature, child development, or library science preferred. Some public service experience is highly desirable. Must be flexible and able to work weekdays, as well as regular evenings, weekends, and school holidays on rotation. Valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are required.
