Supervises and coordinates general music activities; including but not limited to music theory, AP music theory, music technology, piano, or guitar. Supports each participant in achieving a higher level of personal skill, fosters an enhanced appreciation for music, and increases student musical capability through practice. Provides students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular music activities; ensures compliance with all state and district regulations and requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Teaches general music classes such as music theory, AP music theory, music technology, piano, or guitar.
  • Prepares lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  • Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Collaborates with Orchestra, Chorus, Band, and Drama teachers to provide students with integrated experiences.
  • Conducts ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
  • Creates an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
  • Ensures compliance with federal and state laws and Fulton Board of Education board policy.
  • Manages administration of a highly successful and supportive booster organization.
  • Works collaboratively with feeder school band directors to recruit and retain students at the high school.
  • Communicates budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  • Coordinates fundraising activities and manages funds if appropriate and necessary.
  • Oversees the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all music equipment used to teach general music.
  • Accompanies and supervises students on out-of-town trips.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains emotional control under stress.
  • Communicates responsibly with students, parents, colleagues, and school leadership.
  • Accounts for student attendance and punctuality.
  • Follows professional ethics in all work-related activities.
  • Maintains professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Prepares adequately for responsibilities to be assumed when absent.
  • Facilitates home-school communication by such means as holding conferences, telephoning, and sending written communications.
  • Avoids behaviors which detract from staff morale.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.

Required Education

Bachelor’s Degree from a regionally accredited university in Music Education.

Certification/Licensure

Valid Georgia Teaching Certification in applicable field required, or must be eligible to hold a valid Georgia Teaching Certificate.

Experience Qualifications

Minimum 3 years of successful teaching experience required; Experience at the high school level preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to collaborate with staff in an extremely active performing arts environment is essential.
  • Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program.
  • Ability to manage budget and personnel.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing.

Working Conditions

  • Outside as required by activities.
  • Requires travel and job responsibilities outside of the scheduled work hours.

Physical Demands

  • Frequent lifting 5-10 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, bending, walking, and standing.
  • Occasional stooping, kneeling, squatting, and reaching.
  • Occasional exposure to adverse weather conditions.
