Job Description

What You’ll Do:

This position works under general supervision and requires working knowledge of a set of specialized library procedures:

  • Performs library tasks which include checking books, magazines, and other materials in and out of the institution library.
  • Assists incarcerated individuals in the location of requested materials (e.g., shows how to use automation system and where materials are located).
  • Advises incarcerated individuals of the types of materials that are not allowed to be checked out of the library and what the library has to offer them while incarcerated.
  • Assists with inter-library loan requests.
  • Catalogs new materials and repairs and binds books, periodicals, and documents.
  • Discards no longer usable or outdated materials utilized by the library.
  • Trains incarcerated library aides.
  • Shelves and files library materials according to the established procedures and in conjunction with the librarian.
  • Performs clerical tasks (e.g., files and updates computer).
  • Catalogs cards.
  • Assists in ordering books.
  • Assists librarian with inventory of library materials (e.g., count and record by topic magazines, books, and types of equipment).
  • Performs related duties and security functions as needed.
  • Attends training and/or conferences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

3 courses or 9 months of experience in library media technology or library science. *Note: If the position is assigned responsibility for substituting for bookmobile operator, must also have 3 months training or 3 months experience in operating a fully loaded bookmobile weighing 12,000-26,000 pounds or other vehicle of equal gross weight rating; valid driver's license.
