Position: Assignment Editor
Omaha Publications is the area leader in arts/culture and lifestyle publishing, telling the city’s stories in several publications, including Omaha Magazine, OmahaHome, FamilyGuide, and B2B.
This position is a great chance to start a career in magazine production. Omaha Publications is seeking an assignment editor. This is an entry-level position that is perfect for a recent graduate or someone who wants a career change.
This position works closely with the editor-in-chief. Qualified candidates are expected to be reliable, detail-oriented, and curious. Knowledge of Omaha’s arts, entertainment, and cultural scene is preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Assigning all stories as directed by the editor-in-chief
- Maintaining relationships with the writers and assisting in procuring new, qualified writers
- Assisting with planning stories
- Assisting with contacting subjects
- Editing and fact-checking stories
- Assisting with proofreading stories
- Writing articles for publication in print and online
- Writing specialty content, including newsletters and online-only stories
- Other duties as assigned
Hours:
Full-time, 40+ hours per week. In-office hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break.
Requirements:
- Degree in journalism, communications, English, or equivalent experience
- Candidates must be self-starters, able to work at a fast and accurate pace, with an ability to adhere to deadlines.
- Experience with a word processing program such as Pages or Microsoft Word
Preferred:
- One year of editorial experience at a publication, such as a school newspaper or organizational newsletter
- Experience with Adobe Suite, particularly InCopy
- Experience with video reels such as FB Live
