This is specialized clerical work performed in an academic library. The Assistant is responsible for the daily operation of the library, primarily involving circulation desk functions. Other duties include:
- Processing books for the shelf and shelving books
- Contacting patrons for the return of overdue items
- Demonstrating the proper usage of printers, photocopiers, or scanners
- Managing inquiries at the Circulation desk, via email, or other electronic messaging systems and the telephone
- Opening or closing the Library as required
- Responsible for circulation, including shelf reading, overdue books, and inventory
- Providing photocopy assistance to students and staff
- Assisting students and instructors in locating materials and demonstrating the use of the Library Catalog
- Greeting visitors and assisting with reservations for group study areas and staff meetings
- Keeping daily statistics of assistance queries and other statistics at the Circulation desk
- Referring library reference assistance questions to the Regional librarian
- Holding training with the Regional librarian and attending scheduled meetings of the ECPI University Library staff
- May be responsible for other duties such as University ID cards and certification test center administration
Education and/or Experience:
B.S. degree preferred, plus six (6) months in general library procedures, office procedures, and personal computer courses, preferably supplemented by courses in computer software or hardware, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Specific Skills:
- Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal Classification System
- Knowledge of how to use the Library Catalog
- Ability to demonstrate proper use of personal computers and associated software
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff and students
- Ability to use printing equipment
