This is a part-time position with an average work week of 18.5 hours. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Circulation or management designee, performs automated circulation functions of library materials according to established policies and procedures; maintains patron confidentiality; exercises independent judgment in application of a variety of established policies and procedures; actively promotes library resources and programs; provides skilled, efficient, and courteous service to the public both over the phone and in person.
Examples of Duties
- Works the public service desk.
- Maintains interactions with the general public on a daily basis to explain and interpret established policies, procedures, and resources relating to the library.
- Understands and implements components of the Integrated Library System (ILS); performs basic circulation and search functions, processes the condition of library materials, and keeps accurate circulation records.
- Assesses and manages circulation-related inquiries according to established guidelines.
- Maintains accurate financial transaction processes and records for fines, damage charges, lost materials, library cards, and rental fees.
- Performs accurate and prompt registration of new patrons and renewal of patrons based on current Illinois library law.
- Answers patron inquiries and provides technological assistance, occasionally directing patrons to appropriate channels for further assistance when needed. Places hold requests and provides reader's advisory to patrons of all ages and interests.
- Operates and maintains general and specialized office equipment, such as card reader, computers, fax machines, calculator, copy machines/printers, multi-line phone system, etc. Working knowledge of modern technology, Office suites, common internet searching, and general database navigation.
- Handles, assesses, shelves, and maintains the multiple formats of the circulating collection according to established procedures.
- Provides specialized services, such as Voters' registrar, representing Rock Island Public Library at internal and local community events and by virtual promotions.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent including or supplemented by computer courses and public service experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid driver's license or equivalent.

Work is performed mostly in an office and service-floor environments at the Downtown Library and its branches. Occasional work is required in extreme weather at offsite events or on the mobile Library2Go. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to be able to sit, stand, kneel, bend, crouch, crawl, and walk, and is occasionally subjected to prolonged sitting, standing, and visual concentration. The employee is also required to be able to reach above the head and do overhead lifting of books and other materials. In addition, the employee is frequently called upon to be able to lift up to 20 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds, and to regularly push and/or pull heavily loaded rolling carts. The employee is required to use hands to handle, finger, and feel objects, tools, and controls.
