Position Summary
Responsible for the acquisition, preservation, organization, and accessibility of special collections and materials related to University of Detroit Mercy’s history, both physical and digital. Fulfills information requests from and provides research assistance to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and external researchers. Creates and leads archives programming, including exhibits, workshops, and outreach events.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Organization and Preservation of Materials: Acquire, appraise, organize, and preserve materials related to the University’s history and special collection materials, both physical and digital. Process materials by arranging, describing, and cataloging items, applying appropriate standards and schemas to optimize discoverability and ease of access for research and reference purposes. Create finding aids. Lead the digitization of materials, overseeing scanning, metadata creation, and digital storage. Monitor physical and environmental conditions to ensure preservation and security of collections. Create and implement collection development policies and procedures related to the acquisition and/or deaccession of archival and special collection material.
- Reference, Instruction, and Programming: Provide reference service and research assistance for inquiries related to the University Archives collection, including special collections. Facilitate class visits. Prepare archives LibGuide(s) and instructional materials. Curate archives exhibits and create and deliver programming to increase awareness of the University Archives and its collections.
- University Service and Professional Engagement: Participate in shared governance, including library and university committees/teams. Gather and report usage statistics. Keep abreast of current developments in the field. Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education: A college degree and a professional certificate or graduate degree; or 10 or more years of work experience in a related field.
- Experience: Six months to two years (Equivalent combination of education and employment).
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library program with specialization/certification in archival practices. Professional experience, preferably in an academic setting.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with digital preservation, content management systems, digital repository systems, web publishing tools, and online exhibit platforms preferred.
Physical Requirements
Job requires repetitive lifting of light weight objects with frequent bending and stooping, or repetitively lift average weight objects where frequent bending or stooping alternates with lighter activities. Occasionally lifts heavy objects (over 50 pounds).
Work Environment
Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
