Job Description
The New York Times is seeking a motivated, talented and versatile day editor who is eager to jump into one of the most important and competitive coverage areas: the 2024 election.
The ideal candidate will bring a collaborative and collegial spirit to a job that requires strong editing skills and excellent communication. This role needs a sure-footed journalist who is calm under pressure and comfortable switching between fast-moving live coverage in one breath and more traditional story editing the next.
Experience with political coverage and knowledge of the subject matter is important. Candidates should be thoughtful editors who can move quickly without sacrificing accuracy and tone.
This position entails monitoring our competitors and other sources of political news, communicating swiftly and effectively with other politics editors as well as other newsroom departments, helping to get breaking news reporters launched on stories and first-editing or second-editing those stories, and others, as they land.
What you’ll do:
- Work in close partnership with other editors on the team to assign and edit the daily report.
- Identify and respond quickly to breaking news.
- Handle edits of all sorts. First and second edits, write-throughs, live stories, reporter updates, blog posts and new story forms will all be part of the mix.
- Monitor copy flow to the print hub on deadline.
- Be flexible and nimble in anticipating potential problems, addressing unexpected issues and finding solutions.
- Help identify potential stories and anticipate our needs.
Basic qualifications:
- 3 years of experience editing in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent news judgment
- A well-honed radar for keeping up with the latest political news
- The ability to quickly pick up new topics
- A strong understanding of Times style and standards
- A willingness to be nimble and flexible as the newsroom’s needs evolve

- Strong organizational skills
- Skill at multitasking under deadline pressure

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $120,126.82 and $125,000.00.
