A Rutgers-Newark technology hub under the Arts, Culture, and Media Department, the Form Design Studio and Lab was created to provide accessible instruction and guidance through cross-disciplinary collaborations and community outreach programming. Posting Summary

Rutgers University- Newark (RU-N), an urban public research university and anchor institution located in Newark, New Jersey, is seeking a Visual Arts Coordinator (Form Design Lab) reporting to Salamishah Tillet. This position will support the Visual Arts Director in daily tasks, including but not limited to maintaining the Visual Arts Studio, community outreach projects, and operating equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Manage lab production (the lab manufactures and finishes hundreds of objects yearly).
  • Maintain lab equipment and implement new technologies (such as virtual reality/augmented reality and digital fabrication equipment).
  • Assist with outreach programming and hosting workshops.
  • Provide technical and design support in collaborative projects.
  • Interact with students (grammar school, middle school, high school, university), researchers, and artists.
  • Understand Fused Deposition Modeling and Stereolithography printing and be familiar with 3D modeling software (Revit, 3D Studio Max, Fusion 360, and Meshmixer) within a network/cloud environment.
  • Make day-to-day decisions about the most efficient way to use resources and recommend significant purchases (equipment, material supplies).
  • Troubleshoot and resolve equipment or software issues.

Daily Work Shift: Day

Work Arrangement: Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 or the applicable provisions of relevant collective negotiations agreements, this position requires a fully on-site work arrangement.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a related field (graphic design, new media, digital design, engineering, or sculpture), and comprehensive knowledge of digital design and manufacturing processes.
  • Requires a minimum of two years’ experience in an administrative function, good communication and interpersonal skills, and computer literacy.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must have the ability to operate and maintain manufacturing equipment (including 3D printers and laser-cutter), and to apply finishing processes to items/products produced for users (academic, community partners, the public, and coursework).
  • Must be able to run workshops and interface with the public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A detail-oriented, innovative, problem-solver who enjoys working on tasks that require creativity.
  • Familiarity with both Mac and Windows computer systems.
  • Experience with 3D modeling software (Fusion 360, Meshmixer, Solidworks, Z-Brush, Google Sketchup).
  • Knowledge of 3D printing processes (Fused Deposition Modeling and Stereolithography).
  • Experience with various 3D printers (Ultimaker, MakerBot, Fusion 3, Formlabs, Potterbot) and laser cutting.
  • Knowledge of Isopropyl Alcohol Wash and UV Light Cure station, various adhesives, and epoxies.
  • Ability to use both power and hand tools (hammers, saws, drills, files, clamps, etc.).

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Must have the ability to kneel, crawl, lift and occasionally move up to 50 pounds.
  • Requires regular, onsite attendance at the designated work location per the assigned hours and work schedule – Monday through Friday 9:00 am-5:00 pm.
