Job Description Summary

The Executive Director of the Library Learning Center reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and is responsible for the overall library administration and operations to facilitate student success, support faculty teaching and research, provide information to improve the functioning of the university, and advance all university goals. Texas Southern University is seeking an experienced and visionary leader. The successful candidate for this position will be deeply knowledgeable about emerging technologies and will use that understanding as a foundation for leading the Library Learning Center toward a new vision of serving the current and future needs of the campus community.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide effective leadership to library staff to achieve and assess the library’s strategic initiatives.
  • Oversee the operation of the library, including overall supervision of the Library Learning Center.
  • Create a vision for future library operations based on best practices and university priorities.
  • Ensure the libraries stay current with changes in technology, communication, instruction, outreach, and information storage and delivery.
  • Oversee financial operations, develop budget requests, and manage expenditures of the library budget.
  • Effectively plan and manage the Library Learning Center to meet evolving student and faculty needs.
  • Provide continuous improvement of library facilities and spaces.
  • Support intellectual inquiry by aligning library services with advances in research, instructional delivery, curriculum development, and academic study.
  • Provide leadership that invites collaboration, encourages teamwork, promotes diverse perspectives, and values transparency.
  • Effectively manage professional and support staff including hiring, motivating, training, developing, and evaluating the job performance of employees.
  • Represent and market the library around the university; serve on committees as required.
  • Guide the evolution of the libraries’ physical and digital collections to support the scholarly pursuits of students and faculty.
  • Assist in promoting overall student success at Texas Southern University.
  • Foster a productive, energetic, and service-oriented workplace environment.

Education

Master of Library and Information Science from an accredited American Library Association institution. Additional advanced degree preferred.

Work Experience

Minimum of seven (7) years of related job experience, including five (5) years of experience in academic library administration.

Knowledge of:

  • Federal, State, Local and County laws.
  • University policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Library services and resources needs in multiple disciplines across the academic spectrum.
  • Current trends and “best practices” for academic library management.
  • The academic environment.
  • The role of the library in support of all aspects of academic life – learning, teaching, research, and service.
  • Advanced technology and electronic information management.

  • Providing strong leadership and management.

  • Planning activities to support the mission and goals of the institution through library services.

  • Develop strong relationships with academic Deans, the Provost, the President, and other University administrators.
