About the Role

We are currently seeking a Deputy Editor with research and editorial experience to join Communications Biology - a multidisciplinary open access biology journal. The new Deputy Editor will work alongside the current Deputy Editor and Chief Editor to lead the journal’s editorial board strategy, which is critical to the success of Communications Biology.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing the journal’s Collections program and growing the editorial board.
  • Ensuring Editorial Board Members receive appropriate training and support.
  • Managing Editorial Board Member engagement with the journal.
  • Line management of Associate/Senior Editors.
  • Handling original research papers and overseeing peer review.
  • Liaising with editors at other journals in the Nature Portfolio family.
  • Attending conferences and visiting research institutions.
  • Commissioning Reviews and Comment articles and writing Editorials.
  • Ensuring Production receives manuscripts in an appropriate and complete state.
  • Other tasks as required.

To be considered for the position, you will have:

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant biology discipline.
  • Previous experience coordinating peer review and making independent manuscript decisions.
  • Experience of working with an external editorial board is highly desirable.
  • A genuine passion for scientific communication.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and fluency in English.
  • Strong workload management and organisational skills.
  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Thorough knowledge of the scientific community and its needs.

Springer Nature US provides a comprehensive and competitive benefits package.

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $110,000 - $125,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity.
