What does a Park Planner do?

Park Planner has immediate responsibility for determining where park and recreation facilities should be located and whether certain recreational activities are suitable for proposed and existing facilities, and prepares applications for local, State and Federal grants to finance the acquisition of land for recreation purposes and the development, refurbishment and renovation of park facilities.

Some essential duties include:

  • Investigates, analyzes, and prepares planning studies, reports, and data sets on parks, trails, open space, sustainability, community needs, and relevant legislation as well as monitors and tracks key indicators to make recommendations for land acquisition, capital project development, park and trail improvements, sustainability projects including updating policies and initiatives in order to guide and inform the work of the Department.
  • Performs project management duties on various planning, sustainability programs, acquisition and improvement projects by tracking project status; developing and maintaining appropriate documentation and records; documenting benefits and outcomes; monitoring project budget; coordinating stakeholder meetings; meeting and conferring with developers, contractors, consultants and engineers, as directed; and collaborating with County departments in order to effectively complete projects and plans on schedule.
  • Develops and coordinates community outreach efforts by serving as a liaison to the public, County staff, contractors and partner organizations; preparing informational materials; making presentations; and consulting with community groups, County staff, elected officials and other agencies about park, trail, recreational facilities, and sustainability projects in order to meet community needs and ensure input on departmental projects.

We are looking for innovative and dedicated individuals who have either:

  • A Master's degree* in landscape architecture, urban planning, architecture or a closely related field -AND- one (1) year's experience in **park design, ***recreational land acquisition or ****analysis of land for recreational use.
  • A Bachelor's degree* in landscape architecture, urban planning, architecture or a closely related field -AND- two (2) years experience in **park design, ***recreational land acquisition or ****analysis of land for recreational use.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION: *To receive credit for your education, include a copy of your official diploma, official transcript, or letter/certificate from an accredited institution within seven (7) calendar days from the last day of filing. The document should show the date the degree was conferred and be in English; if it is in a foreign language, it must be translated and evaluated for equivalency to U.S. standards.

LICENSE: A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

PHYSICAL CLASS: 2 - Light. This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort that may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:

Once we have identified that you meet the selection requirements, an invitation regarding the following assessment processes will be sent:

A Structured Interview that will assess Knowledge and Experience, Interpersonal Effectiveness and, Alertness and Comprehension, weighted 100%.

APPLICANTS MUST MEET THE REQUIREMENTS AND ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST.

ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION: Candidates who passed the assessment are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. We will use this list to fill vacancies as they occur.

Notice of Non-Acceptance and Final Result letters will be sent electronically to your e-mail address. Scores cannot be given over the telephone.
