Job Summary:

The Metadata Librarian works with librarians, faculty, and other project partners to determine appropriate methods of developing metadata for the libraries' digital collections. They also manage metadata entry, quality control, and data exports in coordination with UWDCC staff. They provide strategic thinking on metadata strategies and initiate process improvements, policy changes, and new initiatives to contribute towards continual improvement in services and operations. They help to ensure the accessibility of digital content of all types.

Responsibilities:

Provides a wide variety of the most advanced professional library services which may include metadata creation, acquisitions, licensing, preservation, digital library, and data services. Serves as a resource to others and regularly solves complex problems based on advanced knowledge and expertise. Initiates process improvements, policy changes, and new initiatives to contribute towards continual improvement in services and operations.

  • 35% Creates processes and maintains the most complex metadata records for the purposes of resource discovery, access, and inventory control, by following local and national cataloging and metadata standards and exercising a significant degree of independent judgement
  • 15% Provides expertise in the analysis, planning, development, and deployment of resources to search, manipulate, and preserve information
  • 10% Oversees day-to-day functions of one or more library operations or services
  • 5% Provisions access to and discovery of electronic resources, coordinates online access, and troubleshoots issues to provide library patrons with consistent access
  • 10% Consults with campus entities on preservation, curation, and data services solutions
  • 5% Serves as a resource to other librarians and staff both within and outside of their work unit on a regular basis
  • 5% Initiates and solicits input to modify policies, procedures, and assessment tools to improve workflows and/or user experiences
  • 5% Serves on committees to advance librarianship at the campus, local, and/or state and national levels
  • 5% May direct the day-to-day activities of student workers
  • 5% Provides strategic thinking for the adoption and use of metadata standards for digital content

Bachelor's Degree

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
-Professional experience creating and managing metadata in a digital library production environment.
-Demonstrated experience applying digital library metadata standards, such as MODS, METS, and PREMIS.
-Ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and project partners.

Preferred Qualifications:
-MLIS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution
-Experience recruiting, scheduling, training, and managing student staff
-Experience collaborating with faculty and other University staff
-Experience using database and/or spreadsheet software (such as FileMaker Pro, Access, Postgres, Excel) in a production environment
-Familiarity working with and troubleshooting scripted workflows for data transformation.
-Familiarity working in a Unix or similar command-line environment

Work Type:

Full Time: 100%

This position may require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.

This position requires the employee to be onsite as needed for duties such as supervising students or coordinating with the Project Manager and other staff. The percentage of remote and onsite work will be determined at the time of hire.
