Position description

Reporting to the Director of Teaching and Learning, the Instructional Design Librarian will lead efforts to expand, extend, and enrich library instruction through digital and analog teaching materials, as well as contribute their expertise to programmatic information literacy instruction services. Using pedagogical and online teaching best practices, the Instructional Design Librarian will also collaborate with colleagues internal and external to the library to support student success and engagement through the integration of library instruction within courses and the broader curriculum. This includes ensuring accessibility of library instruction materials and making recommendations regarding educational technology purchase and use within the library.

The UCR Library is a critical partner in preparing UCR’s students to be globally competitive while simultaneously preparing them for careers in the Inland Empire and beyond. The mission of the UCR Library is to bring the world’s information resources to the UCR community and to ensure that UCR students, faculty, and staff have the skills to fully exploit those resources.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide leadership and further develop the library’s physical and digital learning services in alignment with department, library, and university strategic initiatives.
  2. Maintain awareness of the instructional design landscape to monitor evolving best practices and pedagogical methodologies.
  3. Serve as a local expert within the UCR Library on evolving instructional design pedagogies.
  4. Design and deploy synchronous and asynchronous learning objects in a variety of formats and for a variety of platforms, including online learning modules, videos, research guides, infographics, instructional materials, and other learning objects.
  5. Provide in-depth instructional design consultations for librarian and instructor colleagues.
  6. Cultivate relationships with University partners to raise awareness and increase use of library instructional materials.
  7. Make recommendations for and manage use of library educational technology resources.
  8. Provide general reference service support for students working on the information desk both virtually and in-person.
  9. Contribute to DigiRef, the UC-wide consortium virtual reference service.
  10. Participate in departmental instructional rotations, reference support, projects, and service development.
  11. Participate in assessment and other quality improvement activities.
  12. Collaborate with colleagues across the library and the campus on student engagement activities.
  13. Independently and collaboratively participate in ongoing professional development.
  14. In collaboration with the Director of Teaching and Learning, provide guidance and training to the Curriculum Development Student Assistant.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

  1. ALA-accredited (MLIS, MLS etc.) degree or equivalent advanced degree.
  2. Experience developing web-based research guides or tutorials.
  3. One year experience providing instruction or reference services in an academic setting.
  4. Knowledge of or experience with instructional design concepts and/or educational technology.
  5. Familiarity with major educational technologies, including Instructure Canvas and Articulate.
  6. Ability to present information effectively in a variety of settings and modalities.
  7. Ability to provide excellent reference and instruction services in all formats for students and faculty in an academic library.
  8. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  9. Ability to work creatively and effectively while promoting teamwork, diversity, equity, and inclusivity.
  10. Commitment to pedagogical professional development.

Preferred qualifications

  1. Three years’ experience providing instruction or reference services in an academic setting.
  2. Demonstrated experience with the use of major educational technologies, including Instructure Canvas and Articulate.
  3. Awareness of accessibility and Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.
  4. Awareness of copyright issues as they relate to instructional design and deployment of educational materials.
