OVERVIEW AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

KCAL News has an opening for a full-time Newswriter/Producer at the Los Angeles Duopoly! You will be a key member of the news team, critical to the overall news image and growth of the station. We are seeking a dedicated, efficient, accurate, and creative writer for this position. The Associate Producer will be an excellent storyteller and have the ability to craft a news story using words, pictures, sound, and graphics. This person will also have excellent writing skills and copy-editing ability. This is a Writers Guild of America position, and membership in WGA is required.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Assist Producer and fill-in when needed on Newscasts & Cut-Ins
  • Write scripts
  • Edit videos
  • Create graphics
  • Assist in the overall production of stories for the Newscasts

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • 5+ years experience, preferably in a top 20 market
  • Proven control room experience and the ability to smoothly handle live breaking news
  • The ability to build a compelling newscast with high production value in a competitive environment

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Newswriting, line producing, editing
  • Collaborate effectively with a wide range of personnel to create compelling content
  • Maintain a steadfast commitment to accuracy and fairness
  • Strong Tease/Promo writing
  • Generate story ideas and participate in editorial meetings
  • Understand & use digital tools such as social media & our OTT platforms to reach viewers and deliver news
  • Strong people skills
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Experience with Avid iNEWS and Grass Valley Edius System a plus

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Hiring Salary Range: $70,772.00 - 99,788.00. The hiring salary range for this position applies to New York, California, Colorado, Washington state, and most other geographies. Starting pay for the successful applicant depends on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education. The benefits available for this position include medical, dental, vision, 401(k) plan, life insurance coverage, disability benefits, tuition assistance program, and PTO or, if applicable, as otherwise dictated by the appropriate Collective Bargaining Agreement.
