Devised Theatre Ensemble Music Director:

Barrington Stage Company, an award-winning theatre company in the Berkshires (Pittsfield, MA), seeks a music director for the Devised Theatre Ensemble, (July 7- Aug 1, 2025).

Local students, aged 13-19, audition for the Devised Theatre Ensemble. The DTE creates an original musical and performs the piece for young audiences at Berkshire Community College. The music director will teach vocal parts and harmonies and accompany students for all rehearsals, classes, and performances. The music director also composes original musical underscoring for use in the production. This is a highly collaborative role, and we are seeking a candidate with strong communication skills.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Music direct the devised theatre ensemble
  • Help devise and create original musical accompaniment for the classes and shows
  • Lead vocal warmups and provide vocal coaching, as needed
  • Serve as a counselor in the camp assisting with classroom management and leading activities
  • Develop responsive plans to assist students with performance skills
Job Requirements:
  • Experience with music direction in an educational setting
  • Flexible and creative mindset to support the show the students want to create
  • Ability to compose and underscore moments in the show, and arrange music to suit and support student voices
  • Ability to read music fluently
Ideal Requirements:
  • Facility composing original music
  • Experience with underscoring and devising
  • Experience with youth theatre and theatre for young audiences.


Reports to the director of education, Pay is $750 weekly exempt, with housing included.
