Platform Editor, NewsPlus in NEW YORK, New York
Dow Jones is seeking a Platform Editor for NewsPlus, its web portal for financial professionals.
NewsPlus features company, markets, and policy news from Dow Jones Newswires in English and in real-time, on an intuitive web interface. Working on a shift-based system that may include early starts or evening finishes, the NewsPlus team curates breaking news, features, and analysis from across Dow Jones publications, including the Wall Street Journal, for publication on the NewsPlus platform.
NewsPlus is a crucial component of Dow Jones’s professional content business, and is highly valued by banks, financial services companies, brokers, and other market experts. Internally, stories published first to the platform increasingly appear on the Wall Street Journal’s website and in print.
NewsPlus team members must be comfortable working in a digital news environment and be able to assess stories for publication based on strong news judgment and understanding of the needs of an audience that is focused on business, finance, and markets. The team is also responsible for compiling newsletters, briefings, and other material.
Strong written English, excellent news judgment, a close eye for detail, the ability to select images and graphics to accompany stories, and good organizational and prioritization skills are essential. A demonstrable interest in current affairs, economics, business, and finance is also key, as is an interest in how news is consumed.
Applicants should have a sound understanding of financial markets and corporate and economic news. Some previous reporting experience would be an advantage.
An ability to quickly grasp technology and content management systems is critical. A key part of the role includes communicating in real time with other editors, reporters, and news teams regionally and globally via instant messaging software.
You will:
- Exercise exceptional news judgment to identify news of importance to professionals, with the ability to efficiently prioritize and summarize into smart briefs, extracting from a wealth of available content.
- Uphold Dow Jones standards and ethics.
- Recognize and respond to the core audiences for Dow Jones publications' professional audience, and their needs and expectations.
- Help connect the content with the audience.
- Collaborate with reporters and editors from other groups, including Dow Jones Newswires, WSJ, and other colleagues and those in other bureaus and regions.
- Communicate precisely, with compassion.
- Be proactive rather than reactive.
You have:
- A well-honed sense of urgency along with a capacity to remain calm under pressure.
- The ability to prioritize tasks and time while handling multiple responsibilities.
- Intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn.
- A general awareness of how a newsroom works, including an understanding of workflow.
- A collaborative mindset, function well within a team, meet deadlines, and are flexible in changing/handing off tasks.
The position will be based in New York, and will report to the NewsPlus Editor.
To apply, please submit a resume and cover letter by Feb. 12, 2025.
The Journal’s reporters, editors, developers, and audio and visual journalists create important and impactful stories, firmly rooted in fact and adhering to the highest ethical standards.
