Position Overview

The School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley is accepting applications for qualified temporary, part-time instructors to teach both during the regular academic year and in our Summer Minor program. Applicants will be reviewed for positions as needs arise. As a professional school, the School of Journalism seeks practitioners to bring real-world experience to the classroom.

Responsibilities include:

1. News writing and reporting, either in daily reporting or long-form narrative writing.
2. Video news, including documentary filmmaking or short form video storytelling.
3. Audio news, including podcasting, radio reporting, audio editing or sound design.
4. Multimedia storytelling, including visual design, audience engagement, social media, emerging story forms like VR/AR, and mobile platforms.
5. Data journalism, including data visualization, data coding (Python or R), spreadsheets, public records, and similar tools used for data-driven stories.
6. Topical expertise in areas such as climate change, science, politics, business, race and inequality, or investigative reporting.

We are interested in candidates who express strong commitments to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice. Instructors will be offered pedagogical training on inclusive teaching practices.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications: Bachelor's degree or equivalent international degree, or 10 years of professional journalism experience.

Additional qualifications: Advanced degree, Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) plus five years of professional journalism experience, or 10 years of professional journalism experience.

Preferred qualifications: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent international degree) and 10 years of professional journalism experience, or journalism-adjacent experience. Teaching and mentorship experience is preferred but not required.
