The Transylvania County Library is seeking a Librarian I: Community Engagement Librarian to strengthen community connections, develop programs, and promote library services. This role focuses on outreach, programming, and marketing to enhance the library’s presence throughout the county.


The Community Engagement Librarian builds relationships with local organizations, represents the library at events, and collaborates with other library staff to identify and respond to community needs. They design, implement, and evaluate programs, focusing on intergenerational and civic engagement initiatives. This position also oversees outreach efforts, supervising the bookmobile specialist and ensuring services effectively reach underserved populations. The Community Engagement Librarian leads the Library's Marketing and Media Team, coordinating the creation of materials and efforts to enhance awareness of library services and programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides and promotes excellent customer service.
  • At a professional level, provides instruction and assistance to patrons in the use of electronic and print sources, common software and hardware applications, and other library resources; provides reference and readers advisory services.
  • Plans, promotes, implements, and evaluates age-appropriate educational and culturally diverse library programs for the general public and for special groups.
  • Maintains a high-quality collection of library materials and resources in assigned areas by selecting, evaluating, and withdrawing/replacing materials.
  • Supervises assigned staff and volunteers; ensures proper training, guidance, scheduling, support, and evaluation for completion of assigned tasks.
  • Promotes library services and advocacy in interactions with community organizations; attends meetings and gatherings; gives presentations.
  • Creates and maintains effective relationships with partner organizations.
  • Maintains statistics and records; prepares reports and documentation.
  • Maintains current knowledge of trends and developments in the public library field.
  • Assists in the selection, creation, and distribution of promotional and informational materials including schedules, fliers, social media, digital content, newsletters, press releases, and calendars.
  • Performs circulation tasks using the integrated library system software as necessary, such as charging materials, collecting fines, and preparing library cards.
  • Models and promotes the consistent application of County and Library service goals, policies, and procedures to staff and the public.
  • Attends and participates in All-Staff and other meetings and library teams.
  • Abides by, enforces, and participates in the implementation and ongoing oversight of safety standards and regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of modern library operation.
  • Knowledge of cataloging, library reference, children's, history, genealogy, and other library services.
  • Knowledge of library system computer applications.
  • Skill in the use of common computer technologies, including email, the Internet, word processors, spreadsheets, digital images, current operating systems, and mobile applications.
  • Ability to organize, implement, evaluate, and modify library programs and services.
  • Ability to maintain and prepare accurate records, statistics, and reports.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, and best practices to assess situations, identify problems, and implement appropriate solutions.
  • Ability to effectively manage work time, meet deadlines, and work independently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and courteously both orally and in writing, and to listen and respond appropriately to needs and concerns.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library patrons, colleagues, and associates.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule which includes evenings and weekends.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university, with two (2) years of public library experience preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Licenses or Certifications:

North Carolina Public Library Certification, or the qualifications necessary to obtain certification upon employment. Driver's License valid in the State of North Carolina.
