Job Title: Process Engineer – Thin Film Coatings & PVD Specialist
Location: Greater Grand Rapids, MI Area
POSITION OVERVIEW
The Process Engineer will play a critical role in developing, optimizing, and supporting manufacturing processes and equipment within Gentex’s coating division, with a focus on thin film deposition technologies. This position requires expertise in Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), vacuum systems, and optical coatings, as well as a strong background in materials science, physics, or chemical engineering. The ideal candidate will leverage their technical knowledge to improve process capabilities, reduce costs, and ensure the highest quality standards for optical filter stacks and thin film products.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Develop, optimize, and maintain Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) processes, including sputtering, to produce high-quality thin film coatings and optical filter stacks.
Design, procure, and launch new PVD equipment, ensuring seamless integration into production processes.
Monitor and improve production processes to enhance quality, reduce costs, and increase process capabilities.
Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for process-related issues, including equipment and product design variations.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure product designs are optimized for manufacturability and meet customer requirements.
Utilize in-house metrology tools (e.g., profilometer, ellipsometer, reflectometer, RGA) to characterize and validate thin film coatings.
Develop and maintain process documentation, including Control Plans, FMEAs, Process Flow Charts, and Assembly Drawings.
Design and implement fixtures, tools, and workstations to improve ergonomics, efficiency, and safety.
Support the product/equipment launch process through process development and validation.
Stay current with advancements in vacuum technology, PVD techniques, and thin film coating applications.
Ensure compliance with company safety regulations, quality standards, and policies.
HOW YOU’LL DO IT
Technical Expertise: Apply deep knowledge of PVD, vacuum systems, and thin film metrology to solve complex engineering challenges.
Analytical Thinking: Use a logical, systematic approach to troubleshoot problems and optimize processes.
Collaboration: Work effectively with cross-functional teams, including R&D, quality assurance, and production, to achieve shared objectives.
Attention to Detail: Ensure accuracy and completeness in process documentation, data analysis, and product validation.
Continuous Improvement: Leverage Lean/TPS principles, Six Sigma, and statistical analysis to drive process improvements.
Communication: Clearly convey technical information to diverse audiences, including engineers, technicians, and management.
Accountability: Take ownership of projects and deliverables, ensuring commitments are met on time and within budget.
WHAT TO BRING
Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
Proven experience with Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) techniques, including sputtering, and vacuum systems.
Strong understanding of thin film coatings, optical filter stacks, and related metrology tools (e.g., profilometer, ellipsometer, reflectometer).
Experience in equipment procurement, launch, and process development within a manufacturing environment.
Ability to work nonstandard hours and/or holidays as needed.
WHAT WILL HELP
Experience with Lean/TPS manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies.
Proficiency in SolidWorks or other CAD/CAE systems for fixture and equipment design.
Knowledge of PLC Logic, Process Control systems, and industrial automation.
Familiarity with Statistical Process Control (SPC) and data analysis tools.
Project management experience, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
Background in semiconductor manufacturing or optical coatings is a plus.
