Summary:
The Medication Safety and Centralized IV Pump Library Pharmacist will lead the development, implementation, and maintenance of a standard drug library for UNC Health. In addition to the new system responsibilities anticipated with this build, this position will be responsible for promoting safe medication practices, reducing medication errors, and enhancing patient safety throughout the organization


Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with key stakeholders across the system to design, develop, and maintain a standard IV infusion pump drug library for UNC Health that is aligned with best practices, clinical guidelines, and local hospital protocols. 
  2. Serve as the primary liaison between pharmacy, biomedical engineering, IT, and clinical teams regarding infusion pump standardization. 
  3. Regularly review and update concentration limits, dosing ranges, and infusion parameters based on the latest evidence-based practices. 
  4. Oversee implementation and validation of drug library updates across all hospitals in system
  5.  -Ensure compliance with national safety standards (ISMP, The Joint Commission, DNV, FDA, ASHP) and regulatory requirements related to IV infusion therapy. 
  6. Lead medication safety initiatives and implement risk mitigation strategies to prevent infusion-related errors.
  7.  Monitor infusion pump compliance reports and analyze infusion data for trends, errors, and opportunities for process improvements. 
  8. Coordinate with biomedical engineering and IT to ensure seamless integration of drug library changes into smart infusion pumps and electronic medical records (EMRs).
  9.  Participate in interdisciplinary committees focused on infusion safety, medication use policies, and technology optimization. 
  10. Precept students and residents, providing mentorship and guidance in medication safety and pharmacy practice. 
  11. Contribute to other quality and regulatory-focused activities as assigned by leadership, supporting the organization’s overall safety goals.

Education Requirements:
● PharmD or BS Pharmacy Degree
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
● Active pharmacist licensure with the NC Board of Pharmacy or obtainable before initiation of employment. Recent graduates of ACPE-accredited colleges/schools of pharmacy may fill this role while pending initial pharmacist licensure, but are subject to limitations mandated by the NC Board of Pharmacy and must obtain licensure within 6 months of orientation or sooner if required for operations.
Professional Experience Requirements:
● At least 3 years of pharmacy experience with a focus on medication safety or patient safety preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

  • Completion of an ASHP-accredited residency in Medication Use Safety and Policy, Health-System Pharmacy Administration and Leadership, or other relevant work experience or training. 
  • Strong background in regulatory compliance and medication safety standards.
