Under the supervision of the County Library Director, the branch management are the leaders and exemplary
librarians of their branch. Their most important role is to manage the library staff by communicating honestly, openly,
and regularly with them, successfully navigating disagreements and conflict, and mentoring and training their staff.
The staff mostly consists of Associate Librarians. The branch management may also oversee volunteers, long and
short-term. They provide a wide variety of library and administrative duties including clerical work, event
programming, outreach, technology use, customer service, and management of library site, and resources. Though
they train and delegate many of the day-to-day operations of the library, they regularly ensure the quality of services
the staff are providing. They continually strive to improve their own skills-particularly in management-the staff's
performance and the library's services. Also communicates and collaborates well with the County Library Director
and assumes the director's responsibilities in their absence.

  • Must be a high-school graduate or equivalent education. Additionally, a Masters Degree in Library Science is preferred. Otherwise, a Utah Library Association Paraprofessional Certificate is preferred.
  • Previous work experience in a supervisory role and in libraries is preferred.
  • Bilingual Spanish preferred but not required.
  • Communicate frequently, openly, and honestly with staff and volunteers, informally and formally. Respectfully listen to, inspire, correct, and recognize/praise staff in a variety of ways to help them consistently progress and succeed. Maintain confidentiality of appropriate conversations with staff and supervision.
  • Effectively and promptly manage staff conflict through exemplary communication skills, navigating high emotions by keeping conversations safe, sharing your meaning and seeking theirs, and withholding assumptions about motives in challenging situations. Repeat as frequently as circumstances require.
  • Exemplify and train staff in county policies, board-approved library policies, and professional library ethics. Emphasize intellectual freedom of patrons, accessibility to information and services, privacy of patron identifying information and records, and avoiding censorship. Participate in developing and interpreting library policies with the Library Director. Thoughtfully assess what matters and training should be discussed one-on-one rather than in a group setting with the entire staff, preserving trusting relationships.
  • Implement the library's mission, strategic plan goals, and the directions/assignments given by the Library Director. Also, lead efforts to meet high standards of library services, particularly state-mandated benchmarks/goals. Discuss feedback and recommendations with staff and Library Director about each. Maintain and report library statistical information related to benchmarks to the Library Director.
  • Collaborate with Duchesne, Roosevelt, and Uintah County libraries in facilitating Basin-wide library services.
  • Act as the on-site safety officer and ensure safe use and condition of equipment and facilities. Report concerns to the library director for remediation. May execute consequences for misbehavior according to library policy and report incidents promptly to the library director. Oversee emergency responses and initiates contacts as appropriate.
  • Dependably work similar schedules as their staff including some weekday evenings and Saturdays. Address branch facility needs/emergencies outside of normal operating hours. Occasionally work outside of normal open hours and offsite to provide library services and promotion.
