Glenn Memorial UMC, a deeply rooted and growing congregation of Christians located on Emory University’s campus in the historic Druid Hills neighborhood of Atlanta, seeks an Assistant Director of Music/Keyboardist to be part of the ministry team and support the Music Ministry’s inclusive culture that invites all to praise God through the making of music with a high standard of quality and excellence. This person will serve as primary organist/keyboardist for worship services and other music events; collaborate with the Director of Worship and Music Arts and Pastoral Staff on worship and music life at Glenn; and oversee maintenance of Glenn’s instruments, including two magnificent organs - a 72-rank Casavant (Op. 3259) in the Sanctuary and a Jaeckel (2 manual tracker) in the Little Chapel.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Present for all worship services (8:30, 11:00) and other musical events at Glenn.
- Collaborate with the Director of Music and Worship Arts and Pastoral Staff on aspects of worship and music life at Glenn, including planning services, planning music, and incorporating the arts.
- Collaborate with the Director of Music and Worship Arts regarding service as keyboardist for weddings and funerals (additional remuneration), as schedule permits.
- Support the Director of Music and Worship Arts with administrative duties as time permits.
- Maintain a regular practice schedule to promote continual growth in service-playing skill.
- Participate in the shared life of Glenn, as time permits, engaging parishioners and partnering with staff members serving in other areas to advance our shared mission and ministry.
Experience and Skills
The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of prior experience in church music ministry. The position requires extensive knowledge of sacred music repertoire from all time periods and genres; superior keyboard technique on both organ and piano; imaginative and demonstrated skill in hymn-playing and improvising on both organ and piano; proficiency in Microsoft Office and administrative skills. The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, highly developed leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate with people of all ages and all musical levels, within and beyond the church community, including the ability to challenge and inspire and support those who serve in Glenn’s music ministry. Demonstrated excellence in choral conducting is preferred and instrumental skills in addition to keyboard are welcome. Glenn requires applicants to satisfactorily complete a background and security check (criminal, financial, and sexual misconduct).
Education
Bachelor's degree in music required. Master’s degree in organ or sacred music preferred.
Work Schedule
Part-time (20 hours); hours are negotiable based on ability to perform job tasks. Sunday worship and choir rehearsals on Sundays and Wednesdays are required.
Compensation
Competitive salary commensurate with experience and background. Salary range $35,000-45,000.
