General Summary
The Building Safety Coordinator is responsible for the safety and security of the library facility, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for patrons and staff in compliance with the library's policies. This role also supports library operations through direct customer service and assisting with facility maintenance.

Essential Functions
The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
  • Maintains the security and safety of the library building by monitoring activities, enforcing library policies, responding to emergencies, and ensuring a safe environment for all patrons and staff, often stationed at a designated public service desk.
  • Provide excellent customer service, welcoming patrons, answering questions, assisting with library services, including program support as needed, and handling patron issues professionally and calmly.
  • Monitors property, assets, and patron behavior including conducting routing building patrols (inside and perimeter), securing facility after hours, notifying appropriate library staff of any security/safety concerns, working with vendors on safety issues, monitoring security cameras and patron behavior in specific situations. Document trends, write clear, detailed, complete incident reports and follow up when needed.
  • Manages the Library's Patron Incident Tracking system, including documentation and reporting related to library surveillance cameras.
  • De-escalates conflicts and is proactive in addressing potential conflicts amongst patrons.
  • Acts as a liaison between the Library and City of Lafayette public safety staff.
  • Enforces compliance with general safety and security policies and procedures, responsible for in-depth knowledge and implementation of the library's emergency plans.
  • Responds to and investigates disturbances on library property; escorts patrons who are not following policies and procedures out of the library.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of training programs for library staff on topics such as de-escalation, policy enforcement, and safety training such as emergency evacuation, AED, CPR and Narcan.
  • Assists with opening and closing of the library, making sure the building is cleared and secured.
  • Assists with the set-up, breakdown and cleaning of facilities and equipment for library programs and special events.
  • May sweep, mop, vacuum and clean restrooms when necessary.
  • May clear snow and debris from sidewalks as needed. De-ice sidewalks and maintain the integrity of the walkways as needed during inclement weather.
  • Monitors the facility and alerts supervisor to facility maintenance issues; assists in maintenance related tasks on a limited basis.
  • Attends regular meetings with the library management team and other staff to coordinate projects and share information.
  • Maintains patron and staff confidentiality within local, state, and federal requirements.
  • Maintains current safety training and certification, including but not limited to CPR, AED, Narcan training, etc.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Typical Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
  • Ability to work varying shifts, including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to travel between City facilities as needed.
  • Ability to maintain a positive, friendly demeanor and remain calm under pressure.
  • Ability to de-escalate situations professionally and calmly.
  • Ability to provide efficient and courteous service towards a diverse patron population of varying backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality, integrity, discretion, and trust.
  • Knowledge of standard building security practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of basic principles and practices of building basic building maintenance including safe use of equipment, tools, materials, and related supplies.
  • Knowledge of basic first aid and proper use of an AED
  • Ability to use and operate computer software, including MS Office365, email, security camera and patron incident tracking systems
  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgement when making quick decisions in emergency situations
  • Ability to work independently and effectively organize daily work under general supervision
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Must have good oral and written communication skills.
TRAINING & EXPERIENCE: High School diploma and six (6) months of similar or related experience such as safety, asset protection, law enforcement and/or customer service; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Certified in CPR, First Aid, and AED, preferred, or must have the ability to attain certification within 90 days of employment.
Special Requirements

  • Possession of a valid Colorado Driver's license with a good driving record required.
  • Bi-lingual in English and Spanish preferred.
