Job Summary
The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for a nine-month position at the level of instructor specializing in graphic design, photojournalism, and multimedia instruction in the School of Media & Communication within the College of Arts and Sciences to begin Fall 2025. Applications are welcome from those with experience across a wide array of topics within the multimedia communication fields, especially including skills in social media, visual, and graphic skills.

The successful candidate will teach four courses each semester. Opportunity exists to work with the school's Student Media Center as well as a variety of other student organizations. Primary teaching responsibilities will include graphic design, photojournalism, and introductory multimedia courses focusing on writing, social media, and basic visual presentation.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Teach undergraduate courses in the multimedia program, including graphic design, photojournalism, and other journalism - or strategic communication-related courses
  2. Engage in student recruitment
  3. Fulfill service duties such as committee and program advancement assignments
  4. Contribute to the mission of the school, college, university, and wider community through campus and professional service
  5. Other duties as assigned


Minimum QualificationsCandidates must hold a Master's degree in communication, journalism, or a related field, with a specialization in photography, multimedia, or a similar field, which must be completed by August 2025. They must also demonstrate experience working effectively in diverse environments, such as through journalism or media projects related to diversity issues. Additionally, the ability to work with diverse groups and populations is essential.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Familiarity with the Adobe Creative Cloud, specially Premier, InDesign and Photoshop.
  • Familiarity with Associated Press style.
  • Familiarity with social media production and strategy.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in corporate, non-profit and university settings.


Preferred QualificationsPreferred qualifications include prior experience in student media or campus media-related fields, evidence of effective teaching at a university, at least three years of professional experience, a demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty and administration to advance the program, the ability to teach courses in writing, design, and new media and technologies, excellent familiarity with industry tools and software, and experience working on hands-on experiential projects that engage students in community service.
